I'm just surprised that there's nothing on the website about needing photo id let alone what type of photo id is required.thor said:Brie said:Checking the Chase website it saysTo bank with Chase, you'll need to:
- be 18+
- be a resident of the UK only
- have a smartphone and a UK mobile number
- be a tax resident of the UK
How can you register if you don't have photo id though? The app does not let you proceed until you have uploaded your pictures and have had them verified. I have now got 25 verification failed texts and each one says I have to try and upload my photos again for them to verify.Proving your identity
- You can open a Chase account with a valid photo ID.
- We'll accept any of the following:
- A passport
- A UK driving licence
- An EU national ID card
I do have a passport but it isn't a UK oneNo problem, I was accepted with an Irish passport, they have a range of acceptable nationalities

Cynergy passed me to some 3rd party verification company that required passport photo and selfie. I assume I'd failed Cynergy's electronic verification which is strange as usually it's no problem. But seems Chase is not unique. It's the smartphone /android 8+ that is defeating me which Chase. Shame.2

I fail on two counts, no smartphone /android 8+ and no photo id. Chase only wants people with lots of money who can afford to travel and so need a passport and also afford up to date android technology. Are they targeting the account at the young and more affulent? It seem so to me.

Well I'm old so it can't be that and I know a couple of young people with the account that aren't affluent (but can manage a driving licence) so it can't be that eitherlittlemoney said:Are they targeting the account at the young and more affulent? It seem so to me.

If they were already a Chase UK customer, they could open further Chase UK accounts without photo ID.dunstonh said:
There is another thread in progress at the moment where the person stated they didn't need photo ID to open a Chase account. So, it looks like you failed the electronic ID check and they reverted back to the manual ID method.kaMelo said:
As someone with over a dozen current accounts plus many many more previously closed in switching offers, Chase are the first bank I have ever needed photo ID to open an account.sebtomato said:
I don't know many banks (online or brick-and-mortar) that would open an account without some sort of photo ID. Therefore, it's not discrimination.MartusJK said:Hi there, you might have seen details of this new savings account on MSE. Great I thought, I will have some of that, sounds easy, just get the app, register and away you go.... but then I came up against a barrier I have expereinced in other financial matters, you see I dont drive or have a passport, and no "photo ID", no application possible. I checked with them on the phone, I offered all sorts of other ID that has (eventually) worked for other things, like NI number, Birth certificate, bank statements, utlity bills etc etc, but no, its this driving licence or passport or no go. So my first question is whether this is some sort of unfar discrimination? And surely I am not the ony person not bothered by foreign travel or driving (actually I reckon I should be given preferential treatment for my contribution to reducing pollution/climate change etc!) so how do others get around this? (yes I know I just could fork out £75 for a passport but its getting to be a point of principle for me now, why should I have to do that when there are so many other verifiable and easily checkable sources of my ID especially online these days?).
A complete newbie to Chase UK must register/upload their Government-issued photo ID. It is simply impossible to get your first Chase UK account without it.Brie said:
Frankly I don't know as I haven't tried. I'm just surprised that there's nothing on the website about needing photo id let alone what type of photo id is required. They must be losing quite a few potential customers who can't be asked to trot off to dig up their passport and try the process all over.thor said:Brie said:Checking the Chase website it saysTo bank with Chase, you'll need to:

I wonder what would happen if I did try to apply. I do have a passport but it isn't a UK one. If I used that and was refused I might complain about discrimination of some sort due to my nationality - which shouldn't be an issue as I fit all the other criteria quoted previously.
Their help text might not be the best but they clearly state
It is their choice which ID they accept. Most other UK banks have similar, and in some cases even more stringent, ID requirements, even if they don't check your ID at application time. But in any case, they accept "a passport", which means you wouldn't get very far with any discrimination claim if you don't have a UK passport, or another of the documents on their list.2 -
I'm not sure about that, during the application process the wording was something along the lines of - a passport from a country we accept (or perhaps it was on our list). It seemed clear to me that there were exclusions. I would imagine that an American would struggle regardless of their residence.

There was a post from a dual US/UK citizen just the other day, saying they opened the Chase UK account. Perhaps Chase aren't scared of the FATCA overheads, as they have a working process for it in their parent company?ColdIron said:I'm not sure about that, during the application process the wording was something along the lines of - a passport from a country we accept (or perhaps it was on our list). Well it looks like it's over for me. After the 27th time of asking, the app is not even letting me try again. I just get a message that they can't open an account for me and then thank me for my interest in them. I have opened many accounts with many other financial institutions using the exact same id and quite frankly can't take the risk of using Chase if their system is as shoddy as this even if they accepted me now.

Not what their respective websites say. They all require photo IDs.Daliah said:
These banks only require a photo ID if they are not able to identify you electronically, or if they have reason to re-check the ID of existing customers.sebtomato said:
Having had a quick look now, the following banks requires an official ID to open an account: Barclays, Nationwide, HSBC, NatWest...Like others, I have opened numerous accounts with numerous banks and building societies online, and rarely ever needed my photo ID. The ones I can recall who needed it are Tandem and Chase.I don’t see it as an issue to be asked by a bank for a photo ID. As I mentioned before, I even need to show one when picking up a parcel e.g. at thr Post Office.
Like others, you have opened numerous accounts with numerous banks but don't tell us which ones didn't require a photo ID...1
