Surprised you think your friend should contribute. You’re the guy with your foot on the accelerator. Your speed, your responsibility,  your fine and points.
Perhaps not the answer you want but morally correct by my values.
  • As the driver you are responsible for what speed you do wether you are late or not is no excuse for speeding and if you get caught then man up and pay and don’t expect the passengers to have to contribute.

It depends on the circumstances.  If the friend was responsible for the journey starting late, i.e. not having packed the night before or similar, then he should contribute something towards the ticket.  If the friend had no hand in it, i.e. he was packed and ready and the late start was purely the driver's fault, then the friend ought not to be expected to contribute.

Of course speeding is wrong and I feel bad for doing it,
Is MSE in essence suggesting that it's now acceptable to speed by posting this a moral dilemma?

Perhaps the learning point is that if the passenger is pressuring for excess speed, the driver should stop and get a written and notarised agreement about sharing any fines before they are incurred... ;)
That sounds like conspiracy to commit a crime ...

Only if the agreement is that the person behind the wheel will commit traffic offences as opposed to agreeing to share the penalty if an offence is committed unwittingly.
I need to think of something new here...

Next time I get a parking ticket I’ll ask anyone in the car to pay half as they were in the car with me. I’ll see how that goes down…

Well actually that DOES make sense depending on the situation...
There have been times when I decided with a friend to go out together (to a mall, to the beach, to another town etc.) and when it was my friend driving, I've always offered to pay part of the costs whether that is gas, parking, motorway etc. What's wrong with that?

That's really a different argument.  Offering to contribute to planned costs such as fuel, parking etc. is perfectly reasonable, and is probably what most decent people would do.  That's rather different to the original question posed.

That's because I was responding to someone else.

It depends! Which of the two of you was pressing your foot onto the accelerator?

If you had run someone down and got 10 years for manslaughter would you ask the judge of your friend could serve half the sentance?
