Money Moral Dilemma: Should my friend split the speeding fine I got?

  • Unless you drive a car controlling the steering and the passenger controls the pedals, then pay up!
This was a ridiculous question to ask.

If I was the passenger and it was entirely my fault that we were late, I would offer to pay up out of guilt. But you don’t have the right to ask, because you were in charge and as the driver, it was your responsibility. You should have allowed plenty of time to get to the airport, and made it clear to your mate that you would be leaving at whatever o’clock, with or without them.

Of course speeding is wrong and I feel bad for doing it,
Is MSE in essence suggesting that it's now acceptable to speed by posting this a moral dilemma?

You were the driver, you did the speeding.
  • Whoever is behind the wheel is 100% responsible for obeying the speed limit, so it is all yours I'm afraid.

However, as the motoring was shared throughout the holiday, if i were your friend in that situation, I'd probably give half just for the friendship
  • I can't believe that it has even entered your head that you want to split the speeding fine from the car that you were driving!

So does the fact that you were in a different country mean that you don't get any points on your licence?

As for the fine, yes, I agree with everyone who says you should pay. You were behind the wheel. Nothing to do with anyone else.

Speeding ticket is responsibility of driver 100%.  Suggest driver consider doing an advanced driving course.

Not quite the same, but me and a friend were driving through a city centre that has had a lot of changes and we managed to go into a bus-only area, and my friend (the driver) received a fine. I gave her half the money without her asking - we were both in the car, so we were both responsible for navigation.

However another time I was giving a different friend a lift home and I got caught by a speeding camera (a sneaky section of 40mph on a road that is otherwise all 50mph - but rules is rules), and she didn't offer to give me anything. I thought about asking but didn't - but more because I knew she didn't have a lot of money.
Although she may not be the best example, as she became a very unpleasant person and it was actually a relief when she 'ghosted' me and our other friends...
