Money Moral Dilemma: Should my friend split the speeding fine I got?
Comments

I have actually been in this kind of situation (although the speeding didn't occur as we rushed back to the airport). We worked out who was driving at the time the speeding offence occurred, and that person paid the fine. The person paying the fine didn't expect the 'co-driver' to pay, and the 'co-driver' didn't expect to have to stump up half. In our case it was my friend who was speeding, he just paid up as there was nothing he could do/say.
Edited to add: We actually only found out about the speeding fine when we were returning the vehicle to the rental company. Hence the 'working out who was driving' bit.0 -

This has been asked before, and it was speeding, not a red light offence.
The overwhelming response last time was that the driver did the speeding, so the driver pays the fine.
It doesn't matter if the passenger may have been urging the driver to go fast, the passenger, as stated by several writers, is not responsible for the act of the driver.
Pay the fine and watch your speed in future. And as suggested by several writers, always leave yourself spare time to get to time sensitive destinations.
Please remember the safety slogan...."Speed kills." The speed limit is there for a reason whether we agree it is right or not. One question...was the offence committed on a motorway which did not have speed restriction signs on the lanes? If so, that makes the offence worse.
If OP wants the fine shared, does he/she also want the passenger to share the points on the licence if he/she holds one? Just asking.......2 -
You were driving so you were responsible. Even if your friend was telling you to go faster you were in control of the vehicle and it was up to you to obey the speed limit.0

Next time I get a parking ticket I’ll ask anyone in the car to pay half as they were in the car with me. I’ll see how that goes down…1

Can't believe you've got the front to even ask such a question, it's not like anyone else had their foot on the pedal is it?
If you and a load of your mates was having a tear up with another group of geezers and you were the only one to get nicked, then fair enough your pals should have a whip for your fine, but a speeding ticket when you was driving, I despair!
With self entitled friends like this, I'd take my chances with the enemyWhen in doubt shout louder!1 -
On a recent holiday, a friend and I shared the driving. I was driving us to the airport for our flight home when we were stopped by the police and I was arrested as I had knocked over a little old lady. Of course speeding is wrong and I feel bad for doing it, but should I do the sentence because I was driving, or should my friend come to prison as well as we were both keen to get to the airport in plenty of time for our flight?1

You haven't said how "slightly" you were driving over the speed limit. If it was just 1kph over then you were unlucky. If you were 20kph over the limit, then you really were asking for trouble! Whatever, I think a good friend should really offer to pay half of the fine. I guess it spoilt the end of your holiday.0

You were driving dangerously, and selfishly. You could have killed or injured someone, just because you didn’t want to miss your holiday. YOU WERE THE DRIVER!1

Certainly not, you were driving not your friend. They obviously haven't offered to share the fine or you would not be asking the question, so just pay up and forget about it, be more careful in future.0
