The shelter should hang its head in shame @ladyholly. You have done everything possible. Perhaps when you've come to terms with it you could join a dog share scheme where you can walk a dog living with someone else? Sending hugs love Humdinger xxx4

So sorry @ladyholly. Poor C had too many problems to make things viable for you and Mr lh. Don't feel bad, you have gone above and beyond and the shelter have been at fault from the outset. Thinking of you xx1

Thank you to everyone for your kind comments. Just a quick one to say C is still with us as the roads were treacherous this morning and our van is not the best in icy conditions so he is going tomorrow all being well. The trouble is the kennels are in the middle of nowhere and up a single track lane with a hill. We are going to leave it until late morning and hope all is well but the weather tonight is not much better although tomorrow is supposed to be less cold.Having made the decision I really need him to go as the whole situation is tearing me apart and I just need some closure.2

It must be really hard for you and MrLH having made the decision and having to wait another day.

Sorry to hear of your doggie troubles, take heart. Years ago we had a border collie, when DD was 4 she patted him and he rounded on her, tried to bite. We had to surrender to the RSPCA, it was horrendous. Anyway a friends mum went and adopted him, he lived 10 more years happily surrounded by cats not kids xDebt Free Diary - Second Chances! I think C is a one person dog. He is fine with me but definitely has issues with Mr LH. It is a border collie trait that we were aware of but had not had with our previous 2. One of the things we have found out recently is he was owned by a single man - just wish we had known that amongst many other things before we adopted him.

We have GSDs our current boy is well mixed up (rescue with no history) He has severe anxiety, ptsd and women issues !!! He wouldn't let me touch him for 3 months and nearly 8 years later I still never ever take a toy off him
Hopefully you can return him today xDebt Free Diary - Second Chances! Life in a Tourer........Debt free, building a savings pot2 -
Awww, that's a shame about the collie boy, Ladyholly. It sounds as though he just hasn't had the right basic training with previous owners & because of this, is now sadly a 'difficult dog'. It's an awful decision whether to give up on a rescue animal. I contacted the Rescue about this time last year to say we were strongly thinking that Soot would have to be returned. The Rescue manager felt it was early days & settling in issues, so we said we'd persevere & she was right, the problem did resolve itself. That was different though, in that it was am issue between the two cats, not a series of behaviours leading to potentially unsafe conditions for us, which is the case with you & C, when he is out on walks & getting very physical. It's a shame though, & I can understand you will be feeling sad for yourselves & most of all for him. The thing with rescue animals is that we don't ever really know their backgrounds......even when they have been handed over to the Rescue by an owner, it isn't always the case that the full facts are divulged. I get the impression from some of our local shelters that quite a few porky-pies are being told in order to get already overstretched shelters to take the animal in. These are mostly along the lines of pretending an animal has been 'found', when really it is their dog or cat & they are dumping it.
Anyway, I do hope the roads are good enough for him to be collected today & perhaps he can be found a very quiet home with a single person who doesn't live near a source of too much noise. It must have felt very sad having him for an extra night once you'd made the decision.

The behaviours we were working on and he was doing well but the breaking point was the recent aggressive growling at Mr LH while he was in bed or lying on the sofa. It meant we could not trust him and without mutual trust the training becomes impossible. Dogs feel our emotions down the lead so he would know the lack of trust was there.
I know owners don't tell the truth when they hand in their dog. We have seen it many times but the rescue didn't pass on information they did have which would have influenced our decision.
He is back at the rescue now and we feel lost and heartbroken.
