Nationwide still need it, although less often than before as they now offer 2FA text messages in some situations - most recently when I was setting up an open banking integration for Yougov.

Natwest Group offer their proprietary facial checks via the app instead of card readers, but will still send you a card reader which you'll need to use to get the biometric stuff set up and presumably as a fallback option.

Similarly Barclays will send one but you shouldn't need it once you've got your app fully set up as that has an integrated 'PINsentry' feature.

Triodos Bank insist on use of a single purpose fob rather than a card reader.
I didn't need to use card reader to setup biometric stuff with RBS or NatWest. They were setup ong before receiving card reader (for NatWest - for rbs, I don't even have a card reader or have used the NatWest one interchangeably)

Barclays have never sent me any type of reader. All done in the app.

They used to, I still have one but they called it a PIN Sentry rather than a card reader. But, as mentioned above, they have integrated this into their app so the physical card reader is essentially redundant.

This thread is becoming increasingly confusing.
Let's remember there are some people who don't use apps. In some cases with no smart phone & no app then a card reader IS required.

You can still order one if you want one (although they may charge).

It's the same piece of kit (except branding) that is supplied by RBS, Nationwide and others.
  • No, they don't charge. They have to have an alternative for those that don't use a smart phone or app.

I believe you can use any card reader. Ie a NatWest one will Work with Barclays.

Texts are only used when you setup new payee

And that wouldn't let them read your SMS messages as well?

SIM transfer or cloning is a more likely scenario than what you suggest.
That's why you should stick to using a password for your phone
