Which banks do NOT use a card reader for online banking?

Both NatWest and RBS allow you set up facial recognition on their apps. If you do this, you are not able to use the card reader for setting up new payees.namford said:
Awesome, thanks @WillPS This is great to know. Natwest (same parent company as RBS) enforce use of the card reader for new payees, so its unexpected (but welcome!) that RBS doesn't follow suit.WillPS said:namford said:
@sheramber - with RBS have they given you a card reader at all? I heard you needed one when setting up new payees?sheramber said:You don’t need one with RBSAppYou can setup payees and pay less than £1000 all from the app.If you need to pay more than £1000, you need to use online banking and verify using either a card reader + debit card or facial recognition (which is done using the app).0 -
Are you 1000% certain? I have spoken with 2 Natwest customer services that told me the biometric measures did not cover setting up new payees & that I would HAVE to use a card reader to do that. Are you speaking from direct experience? (This matters because I'm about to close a Natwest account I opened for this exact reason). Thanks in advance for your support to discover the truth!RG2015 said:

You just have to enable biometric approval in the app to confine the card reader to history, once and for all.namford said:

ATM, supported biometrics are fingerprint and face recognition. Voice seems to be on its way.
Although neither Natwest nor RBS are my msin banks, I do use their apps regularly and I am very impressed with their apps. They are definitely amongst the best IMO

Hi, Your information above is not correct.namford said:Hi all,
Which banks do you use that do NOT require you to use a card reader to make new online transactions? I'm looking for banks that use text message or phone call confirmations instead of a separate device that I need to have with me. Anything accessible by mobile phone is ideal, such as text, authentication app, phone call etc.
These do not need a card reader [updated to include contributions given below - thank you!]:
Bank of Scotland (no card reader for personal account but needed for business account)
First Direct
TSB
Starling
Halifax (no card reader for personal account but needed for business account)
Lloyds group of banks (no card reader for personal account but needed for business account)
HSBC
Barclays (supply a card reader but you can also use app instead)
M&S
Monzo
Chase
Santander
Co-operative Bank
Smile
Cynergy Bank
And these DO require one:
Nationwide
RBS
Ulster
Whole Natwest group of banks
I'd really appreciate if you can help me flesh out these lists!
Thank you,
Natalie
I have a current account with Nationwide and although they DO provide card readers, as with Barclays, customers can choose to either use that OR receive a pass number and code by text to make online transactions.

Nothing terribly new for the Natwest group. They have long allowed ATM withdrawals without card from their own, and I believe from Tesco, ATMs.eskbanker said:

I can't speak for Nationwide as I don't use them very little these days but I agree the above info by @namford is incorrect. RBS, Ulster and Natwest (the whole of the Natwest group of banks) all offer biometrics as an alternative to a card reader. Although they DO offer an alternative for those who only do online banking and don't have a smartphone or tablet on which to run the respective bank's apps.MalMonroe said:

Regarding NatWest biometric approval, has anyone used fingerprint approval for new payees? As far as I can see it is only face image approval.1
