They used to, I still have one but they called it a PIN Sentry rather than a card reader. But, as mentioned above, they have integrated this into their app so the physical card reader is essentially redundant.
Barclays don't have full product availability 24/7 Laptop our app
Using the app might be ok but its driving you into the arms of mobile companies as they stop updating security fix's as the phone ages. Always thought it would be the battery packing in requiring you to upgrade.

ATM, supported biometrics are fingerprint and face recognition. Voice seems to be on its way.
Although neither Natwest nor RBS are my msin banks, I do use their apps regularly and I am very impressed with their apps. They are definitely amongst the best IMO

These are the following banks which require a card reader:
- Nationwide Building Society | Very heavily rely on the card reader currently although I can see it being slowly phased out. For the moment, still vital though so not ideal for everyone.
- HSBC | I deactivated the HSBC mobile app a while ago after running out of storage on my phone (since upgraded), logging onto the internet version of HSBC required a little calculator-style pocket code device (can't remember what they call it). Received it but never seemed to work so just closed the account.
- first direct | Same as HSBC.
These don't:- Virgin Money
- Santander
- Tesco Bank (Credit Card)
- Virgin Money (Credit Card)
- Halifax (Credit Card)
- Lloyds Bank
- Skipton Building Society

But if we make a payment to a business that we usually make payments to, then probably not. E.g. the other day I made a payment to Santander zero credit card using nationwide mobile app. During the process, I Remember seeing a warning saying the card reader may be necessary, however it never did become necessary. I have made several payments to that credit card using nationwide current account in the past. I have a feeling that may be why I wasn't asked to use card reader.
I don't remember setting up the initial payment, but pretty sure I would've used card reader.0 -
I have a Barclays current account held for a year to give access to the Rainy Day saver product.
I set up a second current account last week to use for swapping, all OK but I seem to have triggered the need to be sent a PINSentry card reader. No idea why, the app has work fine up until now.0 -
I'm with Lloyds and I have never had to use the app for buying stuff and they don't have a card reader for personal banking, I would like to switch banks for the cash bonus but ease of banking with Lloyds is one thing putting me off, also I have a club account with the free magazine/cinema tickets and higher interest regular saver. Nationwide is a bit of a pita to use, I have savings there and Nat West which husband has seems like some sort of hell and he has a card reader so following this thread to see how other banks operate.0

Easiest way to "earn" a switch bonus without changing your current arrangements would be to open an ordinary, second current account with Lloyds (Classic) and swap that. Lloyds generally do not do a hard credit search for additional accounts (if you care about such things).
EDIT Sorry, off topic.1 -
My NatWest account hasn't asked me to use the card reader for years. It has replaced it with asking me to blink on the app, face ID already set up.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
