None of the banks I use (Monzo, Starling, lloyds, Halifax) have ever needed a card reader, it's a bit inconvenient to have to carry a card reader around with you!
Yes, it really is! (Hence my question!)

However, the NatWest Group banks now allow you to use biometric authentication to authorise most actions instead of a card reader

Virgin Money require actions to be authorised either via their app or using a token device that works like HSBC’s Secure Key.

Thanks for your reply @SebH. My interests lie solely in whether a device other than my phone is required for mobile/online banking.

The NatWest group require you to use a card reader for setting up new payees, which means a card reader is required.

Can you confirm if Virgin Money's token device is a mobile phone app or physical separate device?

    Thank you.

Add M&S bank as they have their own mini version that eliminates the need to have your card or your phone when going on line.  Not sure it would work overseas if you needed to check accounts when off on your jollies but I'd ask that about any bank I use.

Oh & TD work via text as does CIBC.  At least their canadian accounts do.
    What is TD & CIBC?

I wouldn't use any bank that is still relying on text messages for their method of authenticating access or payments. It is a very insecure way of doing it.

Most banks now do this through the mobile apps which require authentication (bio-metrics, PIN, Password) to in order to then authenticate the access / purchase.
Each to their own but I think it also depends on your circumstances.
How many banks, Building Society, Fintech apps, Investment Apps do you have on your mobile device??
If you already have around 20 installed on your phone, are you still happy to install new apps that you hardly use or just use it once in a month or even a year ??
Keep in mind your mobile phone will always be with you before logon your online bank/ Otherwise you will not bother to logon your online banking without them on your hand.

You don’t need one with RBSApp

@sheramber - with RBS have they given you a card reader at all? I heard you needed one when setting up new payees?
You need one, but they don't give you one automatically, you ask for one

Thanks @ZeroSum, so it is possible to do everything WITHOUT a card reader, e.g. setting up new payees, etc?

For those who have a samsung phone eg galaxy S series additional security can be had by putting banking apps in the secure folder using a unique PIN to open the folder

I thought you can now approve all transaction approvals through the app?

You can setup payees and pay less than £1000 all from the app.

If you need to pay more than £1000, you need to use online banking and verify using either a card reader + debit card or facial recognition (which is done using the app).

Awesome, thanks @WillPS This is great to know. Natwest (same parent company as RBS) enforce use of the card reader for new payees, so its unexpected (but welcome!) that RBS doesn't follow suit.
