Child & Co RBS Branch to close

Where have you found Drummonds online then?

We all know that and it is the sort of platitude issued when banks close facilities. Those of us who have a ‘Child & Co’ account via the backdoor method are perfectly aware that we still have branded debit cards and cheque books, but I’m not convinced that Child & Co is still a going concern rather than being a sort code, and that there is still a way to open a new account should one be part of the desired demographic. I agree there should be something online to target members of the legal profession. A major bank like NatWest would not be relying on word of mouth to grow a customer base and there is no branch to walk in to.

If you still have your Child & Co debit card, etc., then you are fully aware that the brand is still active. It's only been a lick of paint on the standard RBS account for many years.
There was nothing online to target members of the legal profession even before the branch closed, let alone now, so not much has changed there.

It's been the mainstay of these brands for centuries. Exclusivity is part of their offer. Each could have set up an online presence, and indeed Holt's did, but perhaps it was felt that to do so would be to devalue themselves in some way.
Drummonds never have had an online presence beyond a mention on the RBS/Natwest corporate archives, and yet the argument that they are 'dead' falls rather flat when you consider they are still open for business.
As I say, the branches weren't/aren't there for you to be able to walk in and get an account, and if you did so without invitation you'd either have been physically redirected to another group brand or at most offered an RBS account (Child & Co had a separate sort code for exactly this purpose).
The high earner/wealth market was already covered within RBS/Natwest Group by Coutts and latterly Adam & Co.

How does one open an account at Drummonds to obtain a Drummonds branded card?

Win the lottery.

That appears to be the only way now, even then it's not entirely clear if it'd actually be a Drummonds account you actually get. Be interesting to know.
It's quite possible that there are literally no more accounts being opened up with either brand, it's hard to really know though since availability has never been widely advertised, and the continued lack of that advertising means nothing.
My suspicion is one day people with actual relationships with Drummonds and Childs will be carefully moved somewhere else, and the Drummonds/Childs branded stuff will eventually just quietly disappear. Closing the sort codes off to new accounts would be a sensible first step.

Already did win but I never got offered it.

He didn’t go to a “bar school” at the royal courts of justice. It was suggested that people in the legal profession would be targeted in some kind of clandestine activity to obtain them as customers. One would imagine a new lawyer would be prime target?

All to do with which Chambers or Inns of Court they are affiliated with, as I understand it. If they were to ask around I suspect they'd find a way.
