Once her PA is used though she will presumably have both of the 0% bands available to use before any tax would actually be payable 🤔Noneforit999 said:Charter Savings 1 year fixed cash ISA seems a good deal at 5.2% if you are near or over the PA
My wife has £40k in a chase easy access at 3.8 and with what she has in another fixed savings, she is over or near the PA so thinking we stick £20k into the Charter ISA at 5.2%.
Annoyingly she has been using a rubbish Lloyds Cash ISA to move money about so I need to figure out what she’s used of the allowance since April into that, pay whatever of the allowance is left into that and then do a transfer I think?0 -
Thank you for your endorsement - I shall await their response in a day or two, then decide how to proceed.SJMALBA said:FWIW, though I don't currently have any accounts with them (purely because they haven't had a competitive product, of the type that I was looking for, at the right time), I have found them to be excellent.
Oh trust me, I've got that T-shirt. I've sold 2 estate properties in the last 18 months - hence I have cash to fix - and I've been astounded by the sloppiness in that area - it's absolutely shameful from people that I would have considered learned and intelligent in the past. There are only so many ways you could mis-spell my names, but I've had all of them in important documents - added to which they've repeatedly swapped the marital status of myself and my sister and the very last email I got from the solicitor after the last sale completed, she changed my gender too. There were no permutations left to try.mebu60 said:
As others have said, don't worry about posting concerns even if they appear trivial. Ones that are straightforward and simple to resolve are much better than intractable problems!BooJewels said:
I get it - I truly do and I'm sure the deposit would be fine if I followed one of their various formats, as others have already posted. It's the principle of the inconsistency that I have a problem with. You mentioned the on-screen details as you open and then the confirmation email - but those two aren't even the same as each other - the on-screen had a space, a dash and another space between reference and surname, the email just specified a space between them, but no dash. I've found four different ways it's specified now. That's where my problem lies - sloppiness about important detail.vic_sf49 said:
I followed the instructions on screen as I opened the account, which you also get a copy of via email, which is to use the application reference number followed by surname. Funds deposited in my account successfully within 12 hrs.BooJewels said:
Thank you kindly. I did have a wonderful moment of joyous epiphany late last night when thinking that I might defrost the freezer today, when I realised that I don't have to grovel under the sideboard to unplug it (more of an issue for me than it sounds), it's plugged into a Tapo, I can just turn that off! My husband had a mantra of "work smarter, not harder" - figured that qualifies in every sense.badger09 said:
You’re doing fine. Definitely better safe than sorry, with both finances & DIY😉BooJewels said:
Thank you kindly, that's very much appreciated. I've been on a pretty steep learning curve recently - figuring out how to do things on my own - finding ways of doing tasks single-handedly etc. - lots of firsts and lots of new skills aquired.Ifts said:
No problem - like it's often said. it's better to be safe than sorry.BooJewels said:Admittedly I did think at first you were over worrying, but I remembered reading some of your other posts and realised you recently lost your partner (and having someone look over something for you definitely does help with the nerves) and that dealing with money was all new to you.
If unsure about anything, carry on posting the questions on here as there are plenty of helpful, patient and above all polite posters on here.

The issue with Charter that bothered me, was how to specify your reference when making a deposit - and the inconsistency in how they specify it. I noticed they had an FAQ yesterday and that differs again - that states to use your 7 digit account number and surname. My account no. is 13 digits long - even their temporary opening reference is 9 digits. I fear this sloppiness is likely to be a deal breaker for me - in view of their high minimum initial deposit and no cooling off period. I've sent a secure message for clarification - if the response isn't satisfactory, I'll look elsewhere.
So it's = 9 digits then surname.
But yes, this contradicts what their FAQ say. I've banked with them and Aldermore before, so knew they both had this reference system for deposits.
If you can't stand sloppy processes think long and hard should you ever consider moving home. Absolute nightmare for those of us who require precision. Add in the sums of money involved with property the frustration and stress along the way can be epic.1 -
Just opened another account with Charter, already have an account with them. Was going to pay in straight away but the account doesn’t yet show up on the online banking page. Does it normally take a while to appear?Steve0

Just a few minutes normally.0

When I opened an account as a new customer the other day, there were 14 minutes between the 'thanks for opening an account' email and the one with log in details at which point it was all up an running.0

Thanks for the replies. Nothing showing after a few hours. Will see if it shows up tomorrow. Also no email confirmation despite the new account details initially showing at the end of the application.0

Re Charter Savings Bank deposit, can we make only one or several deposits within the 14 days window (provided each will be min £5K)? Thank you for your clarification
