That's a good reminder, as I have previously opened a Charter fix and was caught out by rate rises a week later, which I could not have, as I'd already funded it.Ifts said:
Just a heads up in case better rates come along - Charter Bank do not do cooling off periods on their Fixed Rate Bond accounts...jaypers said:Charter!!!
Maybe worth waiting to fund it towards the end of the 14 days you have to pay money into it from account opening.1 -
Same happened to me...Beddie said:

You’re doing fine. Definitely better safe than sorry, with both finances & DIY😉BooJewels said:
Thank you kindly, that's very much appreciated. I've been on a pretty steep learning curve recently - figuring out how to do things on my own - finding ways of doing tasks single-handedly etc. - lots of firsts and lots of new skills aquired.Ifts said:

Thank you kindly. I did have a wonderful moment of joyous epiphany late last night when thinking that I might defrost the freezer today, when I realised that I don't have to grovel under the sideboard to unplug it (more of an issue for me than it sounds), it's plugged into a Tapo, I can just turn that off! My husband had a mantra of "work smarter, not harder" - figured that qualifies in every sense.badger09 said:

The issue with Charter that bothered me, was how to specify your reference when making a deposit - and the inconsistency in how they specify it. I noticed they had an FAQ yesterday and that differs again - that states to use your 7 digit account number and surname. My account no. is 13 digits long - even their temporary opening reference is 9 digits. I fear this sloppiness is likely to be a deal breaker for me - in view of their high minimum initial deposit and no cooling off period. I've sent a secure message for clarification - if the response isn't satisfactory, I'll look elsewhere.0 -
I followed the instructions on screen as I opened the account, which you also get a copy of via email, which is to use the application reference number followed by surname. Funds deposited in my account successfully within 12 hrs.BooJewels said:

So it's = 9 digits then surname.
But yes, this contradicts what their FAQ say. I've banked with them and Aldermore before, so knew they both had this reference system for deposits.0 -
Your actual account number is made up of 13 characters, in the form of 3 letters, 7 digits, and 3 letters.BooJewels said:

You could try sending a £1 test deposit, which will be 'bounced back' to you; in addition, Charter will send an email along the lines of 'we've had to return your deposit as it did not meet the minimum funding requirement', thus further confirming that the details are correct. You can then send the correct amount using the same details.0 -
I get it - I truly do and I'm sure the deposit would be fine if I followed one of their various formats, as others have already posted. It's the principle of the inconsistency that I have a problem with. You mentioned the on-screen details as you open and then the confirmation email - but those two aren't even the same as each other - the on-screen had a space, a dash and another space between reference and surname, the email just specified a space between them, but no dash. I've found four different ways it's specified now. That's where my problem lies - sloppiness about important detail.vic_sf49 said:

FWIW, though I don't currently have any accounts with them (purely because they haven't had a competitive product, of the type that I was looking for, at the right time), I have found them to be excellent.

As others have said, don't worry about posting concerns even if they appear trivial. Ones that are straightforward and simple to resolve are much better than intractable problems!BooJewels said:

If you can't stand sloppy processes think long and hard should you ever consider moving home. Absolute nightmare for those of us who require precision. Add in the sums of money involved with property the frustration and stress along the way can be epic.0
