Thanks @JGB1955 - got the email and several other places where it mentions how to pay - but they all differ a little too - see below.  Actually on the site, once logged in, it says:

To send money directly from your Nominated Account, please use the following details:

    our Account Number: 83495248
our Sort Code: 20-19-90 (we partner with Barclays Bank to provide this service)
    payee: Charter Savings Bank
reference: (your application reference & surname) or (your account number & surname)

My question is that my account name - the name they've already given the account - already contains the first three letters of my surname, so do I basically repeat it?  So if my account no. were (random nos., not mine) JYTUUYDFH6788BLO - do I also add BLOGGS as well?  My email actually says "reference: your reference number* and Surname" but the details when I opened the account say "reference no - Surname" - you've pasted it without a space.   So is it a space, a dash or spaces and a dash?!

These inconsistencies - when dealing with potentially very large sums of money - drive me crackers.
With the various Charter accounts I've had, I used the account number, which had 3 letters, 7 numbers, and the first 3 letters of my surname - e.g. EDC3326724BLA (fake account number).
Mine's the same format - so you haven't added your surname as well?  I have a Ford account and they say to add at least the first 3 letters of your surname to the account number and that has worked there.  I think they use the same system and it has given rise to my username being very similar for both accounts - it must generate it from the info you give them.  Which I'm going to have to be careful with.

ETA:  Apologies @Ifts - I almost missed your post - thank you for the clarification too.  Their details could certainly be a bit clearer.  Ordinarily I'd just make a small payment to test it, but your initial deposit has to be £5k - too much to risk being wrong.

Secondly, I've opted for monthly interest paid to my nominated account (from where I'll move it to a regular saver or something) - but when I look at the details, the account number is wrong, in that they've added several leading 0s to the account number.  I know I entered it correctly as I both pasted it from a statement and checked it carefully on the review screen and it was right there.  Is that something I need to get sorted, or do they wait and clarify it from my initial deposit?
Same here for me, I didn't realise Charter did this until I saw your post above.

I just logged in and seen that they have added 3 zero's at the start of my account number - I don't think this is any problem, at a guess i'd say it's probably for their internal systems that recognise 11 digit account numbers rather than the normal 8.

Though I have had this done to me before by other financial organisations who I took out a fixed rate bond with and my money was returned to me without any issues when it matured.

The last 3 letters of the fake account number are (would be if it was real) the first 3 letters of my surname.

edit: yes, it's the same format with others such a Ford, Newcastle BS etc. - same 3 letters at the end of their account number, and no need (IME) to add anything further.

Thanks both @Ifts and @SJMALBA - it looks like both issues aren't that important after all.   Since I've been on my own, I miss having someone else to say "have a look at this for me, what do you think".  It takes quite a shift in thinking at my age.  Plus, I've never had any money before, so it's still making me nervous trying to do the best with it.

No problem - like it's often said, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Admittedly I did think at first you were over worrying, but I remembered reading some of your other posts and realised you recently lost your partner (and having someone look over something for you definitely does help with the nerves) and that dealing with money was all new to you.

If unsure about anything, carry on posting the questions on here as there are plenty of helpful, patient and above all polite posters on here.  :)

Thank you kindly, that's very much appreciated.  I've been on a pretty steep learning curve recently - figuring out how to do things on my own - finding ways of doing tasks single-handedly etc. - lots of firsts and lots of new skills aquired.

They must have needed monies in quickly which would explain a very short lived table topping rate that’s now gone.

JN Bank table topping fixed rates normally get withdrawn quicker than they have on this occasion
