  • I thought she was told to switch things on one at a time to establish what each was using? I maybe misreading what has been said though. I assumed she was simply talking about what she’d seen it draw when it was switched on.

  • My boiler is on for an hour each day.

Tonight when I was doing the tests of each switching fuse box and IHD, I put my boiler on to double check the outage and it was 3kw which matched the labelling on the boiler. Hope that makes sense.

A long shot, but are there any heaters in the communal areas?

Thank you for clarifying that for me.  Have you been reading your meter while doing these tests ?  Could you give us those reads please.

When I was doing the tests the meter stayed the same, my IHD showed around 100-300 Watts usage and then when doing the individual heaters and boiler it went up to 2kw-3kw.

So my meter reading on the 8th was 14148 and on the 13th was 14473.

There isn't any heaters in the communal areas and also tested by putting the communal lighting on and monitoring the IHD but it didn't show any change.

@steph_87     Going back a bit and looking at your meter photo I see a MFD 2018. At that time it would have read 00000  so in 4 years you have used 14473 KWh ie 3,500 a year -  which I would say is very good for an electrically heated home.

Can you give us the meter reads from your bills for the last 12 months and include the letters A, C and E please.

It cannot be coincidence that your bills rocketed when you changed your heating.

Keep in mind that the OP's property was empty for two years before they moved in.

I just had a little anomaly at home with my electricity usage and after a bit of trial and error, found that it was a small convector heater we use to warm the cellar slightly, in tandem with a dehumidifier.  It transpires that the timer built into it was counter-intuitive and instead of being on for 4 hours a day (2 x 2 hours) and off for 20, it was the opposite.

So check any timers you have and that they're not on when they should be off etc. - if it's boilers or heaters it could make quite a difference.  Mine wasn't a huge amount as it was only on a minimal setting, but still enough to notice when I'd switched it off at the plug when I went away.

£90 to £105 per week does seem a lot, I've got electric and gas my main usage is electric but in 45 days I've only used £57 and that includes standing charges. My monthly gas usage is mostly the standing charge every month, this is going to increase in April though. Iam curious though as to why you're getting a spike in usage with very few appliances running!
Someone please tell me what money is

On that basis 14473 over 2 years 7,000 a year  -  not excessive for an electrically heated home

Edit taking this a little further -  Summer use is perhaps 250 KWh /month - say 1500 in 6 months. Then Winter is 5,500 or 1000 a month or 30 KWh a day - perhaps 40-50 on very cold days. OP is using 65 according to a recent post from 8th  - 13th Feb - not wildly out
