Money Moral Dilemma: Should I offer to pay part of my friend's parking fine?
Comments
-
I would have taken part responsibility in looking for the parking information at the time of parking and checking we were okay to park there.
Therefore, if I'd seen we couldn't park, I'd have said so and we'd not be in this situation.
If I'd not seen that we couldn't park and then we'd got a ticket, I'd help him fight the fine as perhaps it should have been better signed.
Do you feel he wants you to pay half as you feel partly responsible or has he intimated as such?
I'd offer. I'm a great believer in what goes around comes around. Goodwill is priceless.
Happy New Year!

Unsure what familarity of the area has to do with the question posed. Many unanswered questions given the minimal amount of information provided.1

If he's a friend pay half.
I was dropped off at an airport ,16 seconds £60 fine. I paid half.you were mugged, asd it shows in the reply above - as if this was an airport with a private pakring company you did not receive a fine.the key qestion here that has not been answered is what entity issued the pakring ticket.and the correct questin is that neither the freind of the passenger or anyone pays anything until they know what they are dealing with - and even then there is a good chance it can be overturned

No way! If I took a friend out I'd never expect them pay for my mistakes! It's his responsibility. He shouldn't expect you to contribute. Would you expect him to pay you if it was the other way round?
However, if you really want to offer something, that's up to you.0 -
Yes of course you should pay half. You were taken out by a friend. Don't be such a stingy !!!!!!.0

Yes, just pay half of the fine. Your friend didn’t do it on purpose I’m sure (NOBODY goes looking for a parking ticket!) And you said it yourself - he’s your friend. Would you feel happy knowing that he’s well out of pocket on the evening? Remember the old saying, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”I know it’ll cost you £30 or whatever, but that’s not a life-shattering amount in anybody’s book. And after you’ve got over the pain of handing the dosh over to him (which should take all of about 30 seconds) you’ll feel better in yourself because you’ll know you did the best thing to do in the circumstances.ps I’m guessing all the people on here who are saying stuff like “No way, he should pay it himself!” don’t have that many FRIENDS?1

Why are people presuming this was a 'fine' and want to pay it? This is MSE, so it is surprising that some people still wrongly assume all parking 'tickets' are automatically to be paid.
Most can be successfully appealed.
We don't know if it's a scam private one in a private car park or any circumstances at all.
We know what we are doing on this forum and until the private parking industry is regulated (finally!) later this year.
Without more information about who issued the 'ticket' and why, no-one should be assuming it's a 'fine' or that it should be just paid. Really disappointing to read replies from forumites who think it should be, just because there is a 'discount' (bribe not to appeal and win...).
The poster giving the example of the scam Airport ticket didn't even get a fine but just paid it. No idea why, that will have been from fat cat ex-clampers, VCS. Clued-up MSE posters should never pay them (nor do you ignore).
MSE's articles on private parking tickets are sadly hopeless and the MSE team have been told so before. We've offered to explain what's wrong with MSE's own article 'appeal' example (that loses cases and costs people money) and we have been ignored.
Happily, the Government is listening to people like us. Change is imminent now.
This is what you do if it's a private 'ticket':

Win at appeal or win in court. Either will do. No risk, no CCJ by following this forum's advice.
If it's a real fine from a Council CEO then appeal it before day 13. Nothing to lose; they re-offer the discount.
We'd also need to know if your car is leased/company or hired car, as that makes a big difference, too.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4816822/newbies-private-parking-ticket-old-or-new-read-these-faqs-first-thankyouBecause the poster said, “Yet I feel like he wants me to offer to pay half of the fine.” Note the word FINE. They didn’t say anything about it being a private ‘ticket.’We as commenters can only go off the information that the original poster gives. If they’ve since realised that it’s a private ‘ticket,’ or invoice or whatever, and can be disputed after reading the information you’ve supplied, well so and good.
The moral dilemma presented is purely as to whether they should pay half of this fine, or invoice, or whatever it is. It isn’t, “Should my friend pay it at all?” That’s a legal matter for the friend if they wish to dispute it, not a moral dilemma.2 -
Not a legal dilemma because even if it is a LA ticket, they are 'decriminalised' notices in almost every town. It is a moral dilemma.
The dilemma is that an MSEer (who, we hope, shares our moneysaving ethos) is being asked, so why would a clued-up MSEer not explain to their friend that most tickets can be appealed?
We regulars have stopped loads of friends and colleagues from paying both types of ticket. some are as simple as a complaint to the retailer/landowner or one template email appeal.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

Over half the people who come here with problems use the word penalty or fine, when in fact they have received a parking charge from an unregulated private parking company.
The original poster is not the one with the money saving dilemma, so we have no idea if that person has actually received a fine or not. We are being given second hand information by another party, who may well have no idea about the difference between a fine and a parking charge.
MSE towers have an official parking ticket page that contains dreadful out of date and incorrect information. I wouldn't trust the OP to know the difference between a parking charge notice and a fine or a penalty.
It's all very well to say, the poster used the word "fine", but we have no idea if it was one or not because we have not been given any information by the originator of the person with the actual dilemma.
You say, "We as commenters can only go off the information that the original poster gives," but the original poster of this thread is not the original poster of the dilemma, so we do not actually have the facts upon which we are being asked to comment.I married my cousin.
