Shocking electricity meter reading

Hi all

I will try and keep this brief but would welcome advise.

We were with Green Energy who went bust in September this year. We were automatically moved to Shell Energy.

Our electric meter reading in September 2021 was 0189232. Which we submitted to our new provider.

However, I went out yesterday to check meter reading and it is now 1176282, I completed a further reading today and it was 1193137 which would suggest we are using 16856kw a day. This is just shocking.

I plan to call the supplier on Tuesday but guessing this is a error with the meter? We are a family of 3 and our overall usage is fairly consistent throughout the year.

Any thoughts and advice to prepare me for my conversation with the supplier would be welcomed.

I have pictures of all the meter readings and we regularly submit readings to ensure we are not billed on estimates.

thanks all in advance

You're almost certainly missing a decimal point for the last 3 digits there. Can you submit a photo of the meter?

Did you miss the decimal point or include the figures shown in red?

Hi, thanks for your prompt reply. I have attached for your meter reading from September, then one for 1st January and a further from 2nd January

I welcome your thoughts and to advise

    Hi

we have currently submitted a reading September 2021 just prior to
green energy going bust. The figure we were billed on at the time was 18923.000

Also we have not submitted current readings since the numbers just seem too high.

Oh dear. You should have omitted the decimal places. I'm surprised it was even accepted by Green Energy.

As suggested above, there is a decimal point in your photos. Readings are:

    0189.232
    1176.281
    1193.137

You've used 1004 kWh between September and January which is likely right.

There was another thread where a meter had received a software upgrade which had gone wrong, and not only had the meter reset itself to 0, but the decimal point had appeared on the display.  Not sure if it was the same meter model as yours, but this could be what has happened here - the reading of 189 kWh in September would suggest the meter was at zero probably 7-14 days before that reading was taken.

Resubmit if you can and use a piece of tape to blank off the last three digits.

That meter type normally has 5 integers. The decimal point is often only one pixels and easily missed.

The readings are 11762 and 11931, so a consumption of 169kWh.

Another example of the smart meter fiasco, meters designed by numpties that are stupidly difficult to read.  httpimagesdigitalspycoukforumsmiliesrolleyesgif
