Thanks for doing the maths Laura, that’s surprising.I did try making butter once (I did it in the food mixer) and I didn’t really like the taste of it. I know you need to add salt, but it just didn’t taste like the stuff I’m used to so I’m not sure I would do it again unless perhaps I saw cream reduced.I’m actually having a dairy free phase at the moment, to try and sort out some tummy troubles, I am doing very well without milk but I really miss butter on my toast.Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.4

A few years ago Waitrose were selling off double cream at 20p a pot after Christmas, so DH and I gave ourselves a good upper body workout and made loads of butter, lovely!5

I've made it after Christmas too, @Nonnadiluca! As long as I'm thorough about getting all the liquid out (squashed and washed) and add a good pinch of sale, it comes out well and lasts longer than you'd think from the dates on the cream (especially if frozen but that goes without saying). I think the salt helps preserve it.
I've even tried it on the super-thick flavoured creams you get around Christmas and while the thickness makes it all a lot quicker, the flavours were rather lost somehow.
Now look what you've all done... I'm wanting cinnamon toast and I've only just had my tea!
I've had another attack of creativity: I was mooching through a beginner's book on crochet and decided to try one of the stitches and before you know it, it had morphed into me trying to copy a shawl I was given years ago, using a yarn I bought in bulk, also years ago. I'm not sure I've got it absolutely identical but it's certainly coming along gratifyingly, and of course I'm using pre-war supplies.
Does anyone know how many coupons for a fabric shower cap please? When I say 'fabric', I'm guessing a sort of woven polyester but I can't find a label to tell me.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
The sun's been out and I think I’m solar powered (Onebrokelady)

Could I pick your brains, please? When you made your rain skirt, did you do a full circle, or half, or something else? I made one last year by just winging it and it worked ok, but I want it a bit longer and more fullness so there's more room to move.2025 Fashion on the ration

HI, everyone,
Haven't been online for a while, though I have been following the posts. Interesting to read your comment about the price of cream to that of buying butter, Laura. And of course you have all that lovely buttermilk for making scones and soda bread.
I have another spend to declare - I've managed to find a good leaf-green t-shirt! So that is another 5 coupons spent, I think, making 10 I've spent this year..
I don't suppose they really had shower caps during the war. However, I was wondering if it could be treated the same as a head-scarf? When you look at the photos of the time, there are plenty of those in evidence!Sealed Pot Challenge no 035.
Fashion on the Ration - 27.5/66 ( 5 - shoes, 1.5 - bra, 11.5 - 2 pairs of shoes and another bra, 5- t-shirt, 1.5 yet another bra!) 3 coupons swimming costume.5 -

Sadly, I don't think they were expected to be sold @Cherryfudge. Unless you have a shower-cap-buying-habit, then I'd say a shower cap is free. What does everyone else think?

PS: Your mention of cinnamon toast has got me wondering about making cinnamon rolls. They were one of the things we made in Home Economics at school. I haven't made them in - gulp! - over 40 years."Be the type of woman that when you get out of bed in the morning, the devil says 'Oh crap. She's up.'

I always used to use large bulldog-clips to keep my skirts out of the chain when cycling so I reckoned I could do the same with this although actually I've barely cycled in a fair few years - but it certainly has plenty of room to move and to access pockets and so on, and doesn't flap about and fly open even in blustery weather, ime.2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

Hi all, I have aquired a new fleece. It is a hand me down from OH but obviously has never been worn as the sleeves are too long and OH has even shorter arms than me
It is a dark petrol blue with a half zip and side pockets. I have promised myself that I won't buy anymore fleeces but this was languishing in the back of a wardrobe for quite a while unused so it will take a turn during the winter when I am being frugal with the heating
Take care everyone5 -
I’ve not yet had a proper look through this iwebsite but looks like we’re not the only ones living in a virtual 1940s world.
