I've got a bit of time on my hands this morning, so thought I'd move the last of the money out of Santander ready for the weekend. OMG, adding yourself as a new payee is hard these days!!! Had to go through at least 10 security screens confirming that yes, I really did want to make the payment, no I hadn't been asked to make the payment, no I hadn't been told to tell them I hadn't been asked to make the payment, yes the bank details really did match the ones on the account (this was after they had done the automated check to confirm they matched)....
I know scams are more and more commonplace (I had the lost phone scam text again the other day, but the fact they called me "Dad" was a bit of a clue it was fake 🤣!), and that they are getting more sophisticated, but it really shouldn't be so hard to get my hands on my own money 🙁!
Anyway, no money now in Santander 😀! There will be some interest to be paid next week (which hopefully I can withdraw a lot more easily now I am set up as a payee!) and then I am done. I CBA to contact them to close the accounts though (just counted, and I have sixteen of them 🤣🤣🤣), so will leave them to run their course as I'm pretty sure they close them automatically after a few years if there is a zero balance and no transactions. I'm sure I recall them closing about 5 at once a couple of years ago, so it'll happen eventually. I used to open a new set for pots each time they launched a better rate, which is why I've ended up with so many - think it was over 30 at one point 🤣!Mortgage start: £65,495 (March 2016)

A few months ago Santander actually wanted to discuss on the phone with me a transaction where I was moving some savings to another account that I'd held for years. "Are you sure this is your account?" "Yes, it has been mine for several years." "Has anyone forced you to make this payment?" It did concern me a bit, mostly because I juggle loads of money between savings accounts and I don't have the time to explain them over the phone. But thankfully that was the only one. I do understand now that they're being held responsible for fraudulent transfers that they have to be incredibly careful, but it is very involved.
I think with Santander you do closures by chatting with the bot - whether it's possible to send a secure message and ask them to just shut down all zero balance savings I'm not sure. Like you I tend to wait for them to do something. At some point I need to collect the 28p I have sitting in a dormant HSBC account, it just sits in my online banking staring at me and annoying me.4
