I found when we were going through everyones clothes that it was easier to bring everything downstairs. I completely emptied each and every drawer and wardrobe. Everything was brought down and laid out on the lounge carpet in piles of type. Then we had the light to show if there were any stains on things. It gives you a really  moment when you see how much stuff there is!
Everything stained or miss shapen went. Anything damaged went. Anything that had more than one of the same or similar went. Anything that didn't fit went. Then anything that wasn't loved to pieces went too.
We then had piles of left over stuff. We sorted through all of it and weeded it down to what seemed like a reasonable amount.
When I got DH's clothes out it was a real shocker. I knew he had waaaaaay too many and had been weeding for a little while but couldn't do a drastic cull because he'd have gone mad! DD said "Wow Mummy, he really has got a lot of clothes hasn't he!".
The other thing I did was to bag it all up and every time a bag was full, I took it straight to the car. I kept the ebay pile on the sofa for laundering (it still needs to be listed but I can't get anything off my camera at the moment). The rest of the stuff was put away then I made everyone get in the car and went straight to the clothes bin. Everything went in there and we went straight into town to replace pants and socks and get DS more trousers.
I did my first cull last year or the year before. Gradually things had built up again. When I did the others' stuff I thought I ought to have another look at mine and managed to clear a lot more stuff :o. Even so, having this discussion has made realise that there is still a few things (listed yesterday) that can go. I'm finding it an ongoing process.

Another benefit that is linked to this is getting rid of clutter in the house. I've been decluttering quite a bit for the last couple of years in an effort to keep on top of all the stuff that is acumulated. Since the clothes have gone, I've been able to clear tons of stuff. I've been able to get most of the carp out of my bedroom and put away. I've thrown away hundreds of CD's and DVD's and DH hasn't even noticed!
I want to look pretty and I want my house to look pretty too. I have a pathological hatred of stuffed cupboards whereas DH likes to ram things in there! We complement each other because his idea of tidying is to shove everything in cupboards whereas mine is to get everything out of cupboards, sort it and then put it away tidy.
Later on, if I get a chance, I'm going to cull all the bathroom bits. I'm going to make DH cancel his contact lenses as he now has 5 unopened boxes of them. That's 5 months worth .
Anyway, I'm rambling again! I'll list DS's clothes later.

I'm wearing my new cropped Black Linen trousers from M&S (I'm in denial and still think its summer!) with a pink long patterned top from Primark (which should go out really but I love it!:D) and I'm wearing black ballet pumps. School run and had coffee morning here so not out and about too much today.

What I still need is a cardigan/jacket thats approriate as I ended up wearing a pink fleece (although its fitted and therefore a 'little' smarter) for the school run this morning. I also need accessories which as someone already mentioned I forget all about but its the bit of someone elses outfit I notice and feel it makes an outfit so I'm going to have to get some nice cheap necklaces (Sainburys has some nice stuff!)

I've got some new clothes & shoes arriving tomorrow that I ordered from Littlewoods. I spent ages on Sunday browsing website to see what I liked and ordered some plain vests, a pink cardigan and some shoes to try to biuld on what I've got. Its all about filling in the gaps isn't it? I've got lovely skirts but nothing to wear them with so I'm thinking little vest & cardgian (a la Michelle Obama!) would look nice. I've also come to realise that I can't be bothered to go shopping, with 2 kids its just too tricky sometimes but so many of the shops will deliver now that you can get away with it, just need H&M and Gap to deliver and I'd set!:D
  • Kaz, thanks for the above post. I am a minimilst by nature, i like a place for eveything and everything in it's place. It is a constant battle trying to keep on top of clutter espically with 4 children. It's a bit of a standing joke beetween my kids and dh, they say 'mum don't throw/sell/giveaway'. Just this morning ds9 said mum 'this sweet shop (he got for xmas) has not got any sweets anymore, you won't give it away, will ya???' I thought 'how did you know it was on my hit list lol'

Clothes are my biggest battle tho, by far!!

    Please keep rambling kaz!!

    Lol at you Sharron!
When we had loaded the car last time, I got back in after dropping the stuff off and DH turned to the kids and said "D'you know what kids, I think Mummy's trying to get rid of us!" Then DD started complaining that I'd got rid of all her pants, "There wasn't anything wrong with them Mum!".
DH was laughing at her and I said "I don't know what you're laughing about, I've just thrown away all of yours too!".
One very unhappy DH! To top it all off, I wouldn't let him buy boxers, I made him get trunks (the fitted boxers with tighter legs).

i might make a start on other halves wardrobe, much easier to get rid of his things, some of his tshirts were the more expensive ones but they look so old and tatty now, haven't washed well, will be ruthless. Recently got him some bits in next, peacocks and george, pleased with how they have washed. Thats a good idea to bag it up and put it straight in the car ready for the clothing bin.

Today i feel very tired and achy, i think i'm about 6wks pregnant, seem to have put on alot of weight over the last couple of months, most of my trousers are tight and uncomfy. Seeing as its baby no 3 am i putting weight on quicker? or am i just fat? I'd say if anything i've eaten less, not felt like it, and been taking slow walks, worried at how unfit i felt. The weight is all around my middle, tried on some jeans in next in the next size up and they were huge in the thighs, might order some next maternity ones to try.

Today i'm wearing next bootcut jeans, top button undone, next lime green tshirt, white nike trainers, have a fat face purple hoody on too as i feel cold, when i go out to get son from school shall take the hoody off and put on beige jacket. Can't be bothered today. Will try harder tomorrow.

Hi, wow everyone is so busy. I had to get changed as I managed to get my dress dirty whilst batch cooking to save myself work, I created more washing:rolleyes: So, I am now wearing white smart chino trousers (H&M 5 years ago, still going strong and wash well and no ironing needed!:j), navy top, pearls and silver gladiator sandals.

Bunny- good for you wearing your new trousers, too many people keep new things for "best".

Sharon and Kaz- I am the bad guy in this house as I get accused of "throwing everyone's stuff away or giving everything to the charity shop".

Sarah - Good use of the mac, could have done with one today to throw over my stained dress but might have got a bit hot:D

I get rid of my children's' clothes as soon as they grow out of them. I am claustrophobic so I can't cope with that hemmed in feeling that being surrounded by lots of stuff gives me.

  • missm, i used my 'normal' clothes until about month 6, i used a bobble through the button hole to give me more room. very mse I had vile morning sickness so lost weight in the beginning. The last three months i bought a pack of 3 maternity jerseys and a couple of pairs of bottoms(jeans, trousers). i used a scarf to bridge the gap between any coats/jackets. A bit fed up with these clothes by month 9, but heh ho. I sold the stuff on ebay afterwards.

Eyeonspain the more you post, the more i think we are twins. I get very claustraphobic with clutter, and have this 'need' for order......oh dear it's a bit like an aa meeting.

    Bye for now Sharron

Sharon - Just the one with twins! Good idea about the threads, let's start tomorrow! Yes we could also have a nearly bought but controlled myself thread to count up how much we are saving by resisting when at the shops.
