Hi I have just come back from having a mooch around the shops here. After reading this thread I have become less distracted by trends and frivolous tops, skirts or whatever. In fact I found the shops boring. I am deciding on the colour scheme for my capsule wardrobe and I know it sounds boring but I think I am going to do navy and white for summer maybe with some "splashes" of aqua, pink or red with accessories such as scarves and I haven't yet decided on winter. As I go along I am going to phase out all the random bits and bobs by giving them to mum, sister and friends. I saw the shops stacked with stuff and thought how unnecessary it is to have loads and loads of clothes. I feel so free all of a sudden.:j

  • Justamum, yes i do buy good quality generally, my jeans are dkny(ebay) and trousers are next petite (saves on alterations) a few of my tops are from next and dress from dp and a couple of bits are from m&s. The exceptions are the 'on trend' stuff. The maxi dress i have is from peacocks, don't know if these will be around next year and the blazer i just bought from matalan, again don't know if they will ne around next year. So not too much money invested in these items. The £1.50 vests from primark are fab, they have lycra in them so they keep their shape.

Eyeonspain, thats exactly what i did, i kept hold of some of my old wardrobe and phased out as i went along. I have just given away the last of my pre capsule wardrobe to the charity shop, the colours were all wrong and very mis-matched i.e a skirt that had nothing to go with it ect..
Your so right there are a lot of trends out there, to go for nearly all of them would cost a fortune. I decide each season what trend would suit my pre-exsisting wardrobe and buy it as cheaply as possible. Welcome to freedom!!!!

  • Since I read this thread I have been thinking about going through my clothes...not sure if I'm going to enjoy it or not - I have so much even though I donate to the charities regularly when I go through my wardrobes every now and then... I think my problem is that I go through one wardrobe or one box and never all of them on one go.

I also have my winter clothes packed away, work clothes, clothes that I know for a fact that I won't fit in etc...

I think this is going to bug me until I do it...if it rains over the weekend I just might do a proper de-clutter.....!!! :)

Sharron - do you buy 'good' clothes for your capsule - ie not the cheap and nasty clothes which fall apart? I'm thinking I need to organise myself a capsule, but as it will take a long time to build it up (due to severe lack of funds) if I buy cheap it will fall apart before I can add to it. What makes do you buy?

The best way to tackle this would be to start with what you have, i too had the same budjet restrictions, the main reason it took me 12 months to build mine. Start by trying on everything, what fits and what you love should be put to one side, the stuff that doesn't fit or your not sure about in another pile. Within the pile that fits and you love make a few outfits, don't worry about cheap carp, use it till it does fall apart then replace it with better quality when you can afford to. Decide on a 'style' and a colour pallet and when the budjet allows add to it. The most important thing is that your clothes fit your lifestyle, this will give you value for money and make your wardrobe work HTH Love Sharron

  • Sharon, Did you have a colour consultation to find out what colours suit you, or how did you decide?
  • No, it started one day when i wore a pink top, my 7 year old son who has a learning disability said to me 'mum you look gorgeous in that top' several people also commented on how well i looked that day, that was it a done deal. I was always naturally drawn to greys and pinks and purpley lilacs anyway. I then went to my wardrobe and looked at the blues and browns and thinking how much they depressed me. I just feel nice in those colours!!! If you think about what clothes you like it's usually always the colour you like. HTH Sharron

Inspired by this thread I have taken all my clothes out of the wardrobe and I am about to try them on and discard any that either don't fit or look dreadful. At 35 I feel I have completely lost my way with clothes and as a result have completely lost my confidence about what looks good on me. I have no idea.

I have a big pile of clothes that I either don't wear because I don't go out very much anymore (eg lots of dresses) or a load of stuff for work which I am not keen on a feel frumpy

I've done a quick online colour chart and have an idea of colours to look out for.

I've been threatening to do this for ages so here I go!

Still here! Well I have mid brown hair, blue eyes and pale skin so looks like pale blue, pink, soft white, cream, mauve, lavender, grey and plum.

Guess what is the predominant colour in my wardrobe? - Black, quelle surprise! Closely followed by brown and green.

I always thought green suited me, maybe not!

Here goes and I'll be back later on to let you know unless you have any tips for me now!

  • Okay, i know i seem to have taken over this thread, so apologies to the op. But i'd thought that each day for the next week or so i would post what i'm wearing and how it fits into my lifestyle, using the capsule, if anybody's interested that is!! I love this subject and i am in danger of turning into capsule bore:o

Okay today i took daughter to dancing, did supermarket sweep, went to m&s to get some school uniform for september. Came home, walked dogs, quick tidy round and am now sitting on my bum and hubs is cooking the tea (he does this most saturdays) Tonight i will be relaxing with hubs drinking some vino.

For this i wore: Skinny jeans(next), print t-shirt(tkmaxx) lilac belt(next) black pumps(clarks) grey mac(new look) print grey and lilac scarf(primark)grey patent bag(clarks) silver bangle. The weather has been p00 here today, raining and cold. I changed my pumps for wellies when taking the dogs for their run.

    Lots of Love Sharron
