When do you turn on your heating, if at all?

  • I've had two fires on chilly evenings so far this year, and the central heating went on last week after Babet to chase out the damp, it's set to 15 and I've only heard it click on a couple of times as it's not really all that cold as yet.

Just living out of the kitchen until it gets colder so just the one small storage heater on for the last couple of weeks. The coldest the bedroom has been so far waking up to is 11C during that cold spell so no need for heating in there just yet.

My heating is 'on' 24/7.  Only kicks in when it gets below 19C in the day, or less than 15C overnight.  Down to 14C 24/7 when we're away on holiday. Works fine for me.  Last year's bill was £1151, this year will be higher as I've just come off a 2 year fix -£933 so far.

  • Heat pump is on 16 hours of the day on a weather compensation curve. Using an average 10kwh a day since 14th October and the house hasn't dropped below 20oC except the vaulted kitchen which sits 1oc lower.

Going to let the heat pump do it's thing all winter if we can but will monitor temp drops and adjust if necessary.

We have noticed we are becoming lax with electricity usage with tracker being so cheap but will be warmer than last year and looking like it will be a lot cheaper as well.

....recently purchased a couple of temp/humidity monitors of Amazon, (Thermo pro 357), good value at 8 quid. You can use the free app to record temps. I
f it goes below 15 degrees we light the fire....when it goes below 10 degrees we will crank up a couple of our rather crappy economy 7 heaters......

We have a heat pump and the thermostat set to 18℃.  Although the thermostat often says it's warmer than it feels.

I don't think I got round to turning the heating off this year, since it was still kicking in during June and half the time I couldn't access the cupboard to turn it off.  I thought I had as I'm sure I turned it back on in September, but the controller shows it kicked in a little during August so unless it's just straight up wrong then evidently I didn't.

But the plan in general is to turn it off in June then turn it back on whenever the temperature starts to drop in September.  The house seems to hold heat reasonably well but if we go through a cloudy stretch with little to no solar gain, especially during a cool and/or damp summer, it feels cold very quickly which is why the heating kicks in so relatively early.

We only got central heating in 2019 and have no desire to repeat the misery of previous years.  The heat pump itself doesn't use an extortionate amount of electricity relative to the incomes in the house, so we will be modestly comfortable since we can afford it.  (I.e. not walking round in T-shirt and shorts, but 3-4 layers and room-temperature extremities during winter is infinitely more comfortable than 6 layers and still cold hands/feet/nose.)
  • Just had the letters from the DWP today........£500 Winter fuel payment will be paid in November. Right I'll ring the bell and get Jeeves to turn up the heating now that Rishi is paying.😁😁

Can I take it that you don't qualify for the payment then ???

Not for many years depending on how the goal posts change 25+ years.

My comment is based around the economics and finances of the Government and they shouldn't have paid out this much to as many people.

Most of our parents and their friends are planning on buying flights to their second homes abroad as it's not distributed in the best way.

I don't deny those that really need it should have it for some context.
