When do you turn on your heating, if at all?

  • This seems like a very 20th Century sort of question.  My heating never goes off but the set temperature on the two room thermostats changes during the day and is set back overnight.

In the 21st century shouldn't the question be "When does your thermostat turn your heating on?"

Some of us still have 20th century controls ! Very unsophisticated !
Keep meaning to replace the old analog timer and wall thermostat - but ........

Not here - no thermostat, and no central heating! We use storage heaters which are completely turned off over the summer months - and combine this with a thermometer that tells us the temperature in the centre of the flat. If it drops below 18 degrees C, then we switch the first heater on, and that happened this week. Essentially we ARE the thermostat! Absolutely a false economy IMO letting the place get too cold as it simply takes longer to heat up, and increases the risk of damp. The first one on is our modern Quantum heater which produces far more heat on far less cost than the others - the larger but older Dimplex one in the front room will probably follow either this evening or tomorrow night.

Our is under the control of programmable thermostats, so if it decides that it's cold in July then thats when it comes on and if it gets warm in December (it has been known) then it doesn't.

My only tweaking is to to change the thermostat & controller clocks in March & October as it's not clever enough to do that on it's own.

I don't rely on my thermostat because the temperature I'm comfortable at varies, mostly with my activity level. When I've previously tried relying on my thermostat there would either be times the heating would come on when I didn't need it, or not come on when I was cold. By controlling when the heating comes on manually I find I use far less energy.

I think I've had my heating on three times so far this year, but it's now at about the outside temperature where this will become more frequent.

When weapping up with in a warm fleece and heatholder socks over my normal ones doesn't keep me warm enough. It goes on to heat the flat to warm enough to survive, then gets switched off.
