It's even more agreeable to lounge around in your scanties when you use a heat pump powered by your own green leccy.

The Telegraph is owned by Axel Springer - a far-right, anti-decarbonisation, German organisation headed by a billionaire friend of Peter Thiel. You will never get balanced or fair reporting on energy in the Telegraph.

You could have stopped with the management summary, which we all know already, but good post though!

I'm waiting for some site visits and then quotations for A2A, so I haven't bothered to fix my gas and have stayed on Tracker which is interesting for the insight it gives about the market. Last week it topped 10p a kWh and has dropped back to 9.87p as of today. This is not a problem as I haven't used any since last March (or February really). The standing charge still constitutes about half my bill and for 8 months of the year all of it!

My gas boiler occasionally gets used for hot water but at 10p and boiler efficiencies the use of overnight cheap electricity or, in my case, Agile makes much more of a case for electricity.

In ten years or so time the issue won't be so much grid balancing and reinforcing, which as pointed out has a lot of thought and investment going in to it. It will be the declining gas distribution network which will have far fewer customers to sustain it. Where will that leave some of the less well off who will find it difficult to migrate? Perhaps some people who are against subsidies will change their tune a bit?

Why don't you have the gas fully disconnected, if you use it that infrequently?

How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.24% of current retirement "pot" (as at end December 2025)

Assuming(?) the start of para two explains that.

I was in a similar boat, till I'd checked that A2A could cover a whole winter (especially the one or two week sustained cold that typically arrives in Jan or Feb). And also the need to retain gas, for a combi boiler (if you have one) for DHW. Once everything works you can get a hot water tank (with immersion), and remove gas boiler and gas connection.

For the A2A grant of £2.5k, you do need to remove the FF boiler. But given nobody seems to be trained yet to offer that grant install, plus it will probably add ~£2.5k to the cost, it might be better to test the water (pun intended) first, and keep the GCH as a back up, at first.

Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 28kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

EU nations are considering measures to reduce energy demand this winter:

Obviously all us moneysavers are ahead of the curve on this!

UK natural gas back up over 220p.

Looking likely to be a very high (11p+?) unit price for SVT gas in the Jan-Mar window. Given that this is when most people use over 50% of their yearly gas it’s going to really hurt a lot of people.

    :(
