No great surprise it has been approved. One thing that has perhaps been slightly missed in some of the coverage of the debate around Jackdaw is that it was already "99% ready" to start production - as proven by the fact that it could start supplying gas to the nation by the end of this month (i.e. it's already almost ready to go).
The other point, which is being emphasised in today's announcement (and coverage), is that "it will contribute less than 3% of the UK's total gas needs" (as per Simon Jack, BBC Business editor).
So we're not about to get a surfeit of cheap gas.0 -
Nope but a lot of tax revenue to pay for green upgrades / more benefits.…

The government are considering removing standing charges from gas bills.
It was mentioned during PMQs.

What's the point? Expect the unit rates to go up to compensate for the loss of the SC.

and as others been making clear for years price - in $ - or on bills - is not the only thing that matters.
Jobs matter
Balance of trade matters
Gdp matters
Exchange rates matter.
Taxes matter.
Or should do - to all of us.

So electricity saves £20.- but gas saves £130 ?
Gas is still much cheaper than electricity - rates and standing charges.
It also from a green perspective - a dirty fuel - just gas domestic use - produces 50% more MTCO2e - than UKs total electricity generation for homes and businesses.
And the reality that much of our net zero costs being incurred are building future capacity - generation and transmission to replace it - it remains remarkably lightly loaded with the transition costs.

I'd bet my (gas heated) house that that's not what will happen. What will happen is that unit rates will go up, so lower users will generally pay less and higher users will generally pay more. In a way, it might incentivise people to move away from gas.

Yes, exactly my thoughts. If you want to wander round the house in your underwear, all year round, get a heat pump instead of squandering gas.
