According to https://grid.iamkate.com/, 62% of today's power going into the Grid was generated by wind. Not bad.Robin9 said:Does anyone have any info on the effect of Storm Bert on our power supplies this weekend ? There is a Past day/week/year and all time option on that site, apart from that National Grid do publish the figures for previous periods quarterly and Ofgem do some kind of summary as well, they will be on their website somewhere.Robin9 said:Thank you GT - is there historic data available.?1 -

I usually refer to Energy Dashboard - real time and historical GB electricity data, carbon emissions and UK generation sites mapping. It's a fascinating site, and it clearly shows, for example, that when Bert arrived, wind started delivering 20GW for the duration. This didn't quite reach the almost 22GW on the day before last Christmas Eve, but it sure saved a lot of gas.Robin9 said:... is there historic data available.?
When I restricted the view to renewables only, I was a bit surprised to see how little hydropower was contributing by comparison. Perhaps we should be harnessing a bit more of the power of all that water we saw cascading down the Welsh valleys. You can't rely on the wind always blowing when you need it to, but there's rarely a shortage of rain in Wales.

No so much a plan as just what could happen, in the same way as a house not on the gas grid is worth less than an otherwise identical one which is.

It is isn't it. I belong to a U3A Environment group and we have been looking at wind, solar and nuclear. I was expecting Bert to have a detrimental effect with the turbines being shut down due to excessive wind speedIldhund said:

Your link shows a very steady drop in Grid Demand - 49GW in 2009 to 38GW last year. Probably the result of lots of little things - better housing insulation, loss of heavy industry, more efficient household appliances .............
I wonder when we shall see a rise due to EV ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
I believe the adoption of LED lighting has been one of the largest factors in the reduction of demand.0

Much truth in that. I've just thrown out some old Christmas lights that were taking 32W, where the current LED ones take 2W.
