How do ordinary people make the switch to electric vehicles ?

Home market focus came before export? MG apparently meaning Modern Gentleman.Grumpy_chap said:Makes you wonder whether SAIC aren't kicking themselves for not investing a bit more in advertising and chucking the MGs out at £50k instead.
I test-drove an MG6 when it first came out. It was OK - but plasticy and cheap as chips. I'm guessing that the new ZS (as opposed to the re-worked and re-badged Rover of 20 years back) is similar and as jimbo says - they are selling to people who are rating practicality and price over image. Because Dacia don't do an EV yet.I need to think of something new here...1 -

Do you honestly think they'd sell just as many badged SAIC?
People are more likely buying based on cost, since the MG 5 EV is incredible value for an all electric estate, and the MG ZS / MG 3 were pretty cheap compared to their peers too.
Really...?
We'll never know now, but knowing how (kind) jingoistic and (unkind) downright racist Britain is right now, I doubt it.0 -
Britain is racist? Where have you got that from?!BOWFER said:Herzlos said:

I find it to be a wonderfully multi-cultural, accepting and open country that's learning from its past to ensure it does better today and in the future.
Are there some racist Britons? Sadly. But every country has its bad'ns - thankfully I think Britain has relatively few. But I would stongly argue agains the notion that Britain is "downright racist".1 -

What an utterly rubbish post to me in with at this point.movilogo said:Electric cars are too expensive. Charging takes too long.
Ordinary people can continue with cheaper, better petrol/diesel cars as long as these are avaialble.

Not at all, it's just a silly post to come in with.Flight3287462 said:

Like having a chat about craft ales in a pub and someone walking past going "they're all rubbish"
Doesn't add anything whatsoever.1 -
Sorry if my four penneth isn't warranted but I looked at an MG....typical woman I went by looks saw one the a carpark - so off we went to local garage, all I can say if anyone thinks it's in anyway an MG - they will soon realize it is not when they take a closer look.
There is a reason things are referred to as cheap imports. Although not so cheap in this case.
As to the main question - I have no idea how ordinary folk can financially make the switch. One hopes maybe supply and demand might lower the price over the years. Also those with mobility cars are already being gently pushed to hybrid and my neighbour has just got one. In three years when he would again be due a change his garage has told him his next car will be EV. so the mobility scheme is moving to EV.

The revamped 2022 MGZS is still ugly as sin.NBLondon said:

The Marvel-R now, that's much more like it.

The big touchscreen is very Tesla-esque.
Hopefully the CPU/RAM behind the system is beefy enough to make the system smooth and quick - something lower-end cars with such displays are often criticised for.
BTW @BOWFER the nearest dealer to you is Mackie Motors in Brechin.

Not forgetting the Tesla Model Y made for european market in China: Shanghai (Giga Shanghai)Grumpy_chap said:
There is also a massive amount of "double standards" in how people view brands.Advocado said:
I think it's actually really sad that people are buying MGs thinking they have something to do with the old MG they used to know.BOWFER said:As I mentioned in another post, they're going to hit all kinds of jingoistic nonsense here.
Would the MG5 and MGZS electric cars have sold so many if they were known as the SAIC5 and SAIC-EZS?
Not a chance.
People really are so easy to dupe.
The Chinese-owned SAIC / MG EV new entry vehicle is, apparently un-desirable.
The Chinese-owned Geely / Polestar new entry vehicle is, apparently a highly desirable premium car.
The complete stranger no history doesn't want to run a car company and makes cars with poor build quality Elon / Tesla is, apparently, highly desireable.
Makes you wonder whether SAIC aren't kicking themselves for not investing a bit more in advertising and chucking the MGs out at £50k instead.Life in the slow lane0 -
Only the same as when the like as Datson (Nissan) came over back in the 70's. Look at them and other Japanese manufactures now.BOWFER said:
I've zero doubt the MG badge helps, adding an air of familiarity.jimbo6977 said:
I'm not convinced too many are. I think they are buying them because they are the cheapest sensible EVs available.
How many people buying a Citroen have any concept that they are buying a Dutch-Italian-American car?
You'll never convince me the cars would sell the same if they were badged SAIC, even with the cheap cost and long warranty.
I'd venture SAIC have thought the same, or they wouldn't have bothered.Life in the slow lane0
