There is an option to obtain right to reside which has to be renewed every 10 years or full French citizenship.

Both require specific  continuous  residence in France to be able to apply.

Both also involve paying French tax rates (obviously to the French government), which are very much higher than those in the UK.

Why did you not apply for whatever it was (some sort or residency thing) before Brexit happened? There was plenty of time to do it it was well publicised (I forget what it was as had no use for it)
UnBrexit won't happen we voted for it, how did we know what total a****les they would turn out to be? Well we should have known really it's why we wanted to leave.............

I assume you are referring to the EU.
It was the British who, as you say, voted to relinquish their EU citizenship and all associated rights, not the EU who took it from us.

  • If you want to stay in France for more than 3 months but don't want to apply for French residency, then your only other option is to apply for the 180 day visa. There are 3 places at which to apply for a 180 day visa, 1) French Consulate, London, 2) TLS Manchester (actually Salford Quays), 3) Edinburgh. The cost is 99 Euros for the visa, plus 35 Euros admin charge.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      You'll need your passport with the usual 6 months left on it, at the time of your return to the UK, one years travel insurance , bank statements to prove that you have 65 Euros per day to live on (apparently credit cards are acceptable), proof of accommodation (hotel or your own property). Maybe more documents as well. Go online and research this in French / English.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           I will make an appointment with TLS (Salford Quays) for January 2022. I will double check with them to make sure that I have all the correct documents. At the appointment, they check everything, then I pay and they send everything off to the French Consulate in London. When they get the stuff back, either I make an appointment to collect it all or I pay £16.00 for courier delivery to my home address.

Because they are not resident in France, they just have a holiday home there. The special residency permit issued to UK nationals in France was only for those resident there before 31 Dec 2020.

Depending on how they get on with the locals, what their income source is, how long they were staying there etc it may have been possible to fraudulently claim residency and get away with it (an ex colleague did under the regular rules as soon as the Brexit vote happened but he was well integrated to the community and new the local officials well who supported his application)

There appears to be considerable confusion even in official circles over long-term tourists, residence and residence permits. It would appear that, as far as the EU is concerned, long-term tourists require a residence permit or some other form of permit.
However the residence permit does not automatically make them resident.

village-saver, take a look at the French Government website, in English. I think you may have to google this.

No surprise what French officials assist in fraud.  Not unknown in other countries either.
