We own property in France, what are our options to stay longer than the 3 months dictated by Brexit

Options

Hi,

We own property in France and would like to stay longer than the 3 months allowed by Brexit.

Any ideas what our options are?

Thanks

  • Meet their very strict criteria to apply for a visa - the income required to qualify is tough if you will not be working out there.

Or, what they say and campaign to reverse Brexit - there's no other way at the moment sadly

I know people who have property in Turkey.
When their Turkish visa was due to expire, they caught a ferry to Greece and then renewed their Turkish visa.
Same for people who stayed long-term in Goa and wanted to stay beyond the 180 day limit.
They got a flight to Sri Lanka.
    Is that an option?

Reversing Brexit ain't gonna happen.  The Labour party has said they won't campaign to reverse it, presumably because they know that would be yet another nail in the coffin of ever being re-elected.  The only option currently is to comply with their residency requirements.

That's called the 'visa run'. For Brits (and other nationalities who can visit EU without a visa), after the ninety days' stay you have to remain outside the EU for ninety days before returning. So, without a visa of some kind, you can for example stay for ninety days twice per year.

French residence can be obtained, but it would have been better to do it before EU citizenship was lost, it's much more difficult now.

    Ok, thanks.

So it's not an option for the OP.

It won't be in these circumstances sadly.

France has one of the more stringent entry requirements in the EU and is one of the few countries I'd find it very difficult to gain residency for my own circumstances. Some would be easier than others.

The best way, as mentioned above, would be to join the campaign to re-join the Single Market at a minimum, as there's no reason why the UK can't do that and have the freedom to make its own trade deals (as the government want) outside of the EU Customs Area.

Check for any Irish ancestry and apply for an Irish passport?  Only said partly tongue-in-cheek.

France and Germany would work hard to block that from happening as it would give other countries currently in the EU the idea to do the same.

    And I wouldn't blame them.
