Also just to add something you may already know. You do not have to stay 90 days in a block. Conceivably you could spend 1 week in France and  then 1 week in the UK on and off for the entire year just so long as you didn´t break the 90 days in 180 rule.

Obviously that´s quite ridiculous, but entirely possible under the rules.

    Fight the WEF.

  •  Thanks

I too was wondering if it’s worth taking a chance and outstaying the allotted time scale.

There have been loads of burglaries in France due to these and Covid rules ( our properties
included- where they have literally taken pretty much everything except the proverbial kitchen
     sink)

Possible consequences of overstaying 90 day rule:

    https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/brits-overstaying-eus-90-180-days-rule-to-face-penalties/

There are exception like if you were hospitalised and couldn't return to UK so exceeded the 90 day rule.
  • Having read the penalties it’s not worth taking the risk, thanks NCC1701-A .

Yes Sandtree I am one of those but obviously didn’t put myself in that category as we have owned property there for 17 years and have been used to coming and going as we please & we don’t travel by dinghy!

Many of those now crossing the channel are people who (used to) own property... and you can be sure that they would be using Ryanair if they were allowed to do so.
  • The Schengen countries 90/180 checks at the border are not new - they have  been a regular check for non EU residents entering /leaving EU .They just seems new to Brits because it these rules didn’t apply to UK when the country was part of the EU.

A residents permit and some visas give you residency rights in France not owning property.

That is the same in the UK - someone  who owns a property in UK , also needs residency rights to live here .

Brits have been given the same rights as other non EU nationals  - visa free stay in Schengen area countries for a maximum of 90 days in any 180 period .

I don't see the other option being discussed: Becoming a French citizen.  This is what my father has done.

It was probably easier for him, as he was already living in France full time before 2016.

    (He's become a dual french/british).

If Spain is anything to go by, obtaining a residence permit is a very hit and miss affair. It is probably worth applying for a permit just to see what happens.

I've just been looking at information about long stay visas but ended up more confused than before I started.  I don't know if that is an option.
