  • I would echo some of the advice above .... but I've found Inkcycle remanufactured cartridges to be fine in practice (www.inkcycle.co.uk).

As the name suggests they are also recycled cartridges .... the firm has a freephone number (0800 652 7085) ... and orders are post free for amounts over £10.

Don't blame me if you have any problems with them ...... but they do offer a guarantee of quality .... and I haven't had any problems at all.

Save money ... not the planet!

  • I have had a Brother laser printer for 5 years very cheap to buy and run + Brother colour printer/scanner (ink dried up so is pretty useless, but the scanner still works) and I used to get my photos printed online. which works out pretty expensive when you add the cost of an album to put the photos in, however the quality is so much better than an inkjet printers results. Now I use a Photo Frame for my photos. After the initial outlay, about £39 for a cheap one (but still pretty good) there is no more outlay. you can not have a better saving than that.
  • I've always used third party cartridges without any problem.
My 2 year old canon pixma ip1000 is still going strong.
I get mine from PrintCartridgeDirect.com
  • I have been using an HP Psc500 for 6-7 years now without any problems whatsoever - OK, at the time it cost me c£180, but is metal construction as opposed to the cheap plastic ones available now.
As has been stated, the cost of HP branded ink cartridges are extortionate (around £42 per set) - but I ALWAYS use remanufactured & to date have NEVER experienced any problems.
Might I suggest the following for VERY cheap inks -
ijtdirect.co.uk have a promotion on at the moment - simply enter the Code222NV in the promo box on the homepage & prices are reduced by 50%.
This brings my costs for my cartridges down to £5.99 (black) & £6.49 (colour) - QUITE a saving!!
In addition, there is a 12 month no-quibble warranty on all their products, free P&P for orders over £15.99, & a Freephone number for telephone ordering!!
Most of the major brands are available as well as good reductions on Laser Toners.
Hope this might prove useful to some readers. :j

  • For those of you with a HP printer, take a look at the "Peach System".

It separates the print head (expensive part of the cartridge) from the ink cartridge. When you run out of ink, you simply pop out the ink container (which is very easy and clean to do) and insert a new one into your old printhead... lots cleaner than DIY ink refill kits.

For my printer, HP PSC 1410 the Peach system ink cartridges hold 3 times as much, and cost a fraction of the price (still physically the same size though)

With Peach you start by buying the "starter kit", which contains one usable printhead and usually 2 of the ink cartridges. I paid £21.99 for mine from the cartridge people and they are also giving 1 free extra ink cartrdige so you get 3 . Each of the holds 19mls of ink. The original 21 cartridges hold 5ml.
So for £21.99 you get 57mls of ink. Then after you've got the printhead you only need to buy the ink cartridges..... £10.99 for 3 (which is 2 + 1 free)... so 57mls of ink for £10.99 ... Very good when you consider the original HP 21's are RRP £12.99 for 5mls!

    3rd party inks.

I have an Epson RX500 which I got on a free 3 years ago and ever since the carts ran out it has had Ritek ink from www.ukdvdr.co.uk in it they cost when on offer £3.99 a set (£4.49 normally) for a set of 6 carts and then I buy an extra couple of blacks as well.

We print out a lot of photos on it and really really cane it, I'm a Network manager and my partner is a freelance graphic designer so trust me when I say we work that machine.

It has NEVER ever gone wrong (apart from the odd paper jam) apart from recently when it came up with the dreaded Service warning.

The service warning is basically a page counter and after so long it will refuse to print assuming that the bit of cotton wool type stuff that soaks up the ink is full, if you take this out you can give it a clean and put it back, then google around and you can find out how to reset the printer and away it will go (you can just reset the printer but dont whinge if it leaks ink later on you lol).

I have bought Tesco ink for our A3 HP and its been total s*** every time i've had carts with no cyan in or no magenta or just plain wouldnt work.

In my 12 years in the IT industry I have never personally experienced a 3rd party ink cart damaging a printer and i've seen a LOT of printers.

Some people prefer HP some Canon me I prefer Epson as even taking cleaning cycles into account £ for £ they are by far the cheapest to run esp whenm 6 carts is £3.99 or £4.49.

Please please please dont just look at the price of the printer when buying, so many people do this and just dont realise the long term running costs of a printer, tbh at the moment as an example I have a company who are prepared to GIVE me Kyocera colour lasers in return for buying consumables from them because THAT is where the money is and I shall be taking them up on the offer lol
  • You can get the Olivetti 3 in 1 Photo Quality Printer for £9.99 ex VAT! Go to www.oyyy.co.uk/dotw (you wont find it otherwise). This equates to £11.74 each and you have to pay postage of £4.99 but that's still cheaper than the £29.99 you pay at Argos. Also the postage covers all the items you order. I ordered 2 printers myself and got them for less than £30! Hurry while stocks last.
