hi all
Does anyone know of a cheap laser printer that comes with a scanner?0 -
Just a thought I have two Epson printers and as they are not used very often they to suffered from the ink drying out (I only use my office printer to print month end reports) and I was installing a new cartridge every time I use the printer so I bought from ebay a ( cis ) continues ink system, about £20 with ink
Also do a search for ssc service utility for Epson
But before you say it all I really need is a laser b&w printer0 -

Sorry but what are third party cartridges? How do you go about buying these? I've never heard of this expression before.0

Just a point about Olivetti printers
They are good - but, getting the cartridges - not so easy. Argos sell them, you can order from Olivetti, of course but they are expensive. I think I paid £22.99 for both black and colour - and of course, you need another cartridge for the photo printing. So be prepared for the ongoing costs.
Of course, if anyone knows where the cartridges are cheaper, please post on here!
The refs for the cartridges I need are black : IN 502 (B0495), colour : IN 504 (B0496)0 -

B&W laser is a very cost-effective way to get a reliable printer - the toner cartridge will last and last (and last). Also, unlike inkjets, lasers can sit unused for ages, and then fire up and start working again. Many inkjets will suffer (the ink dries up and clogs in the nozzles).
I agree with most of what you say. However, regarding the above, I would point out that adding toner to anything automatically makes it a more complex bit of kit. For example it is likely that any such printer will require two or more replaceable components and I don't just mean different coloured toners. Toner based machines more often than not will need their photoreceptor unit replacing at some point and when this happens the cost per copy, averaged out, can suddenly rocket. A heating unit may also be separate and these can be expensive to replace too.
At a company I worked for I once inherited a Xerox colour printer that had 12 consumables associated with it. For the colours it required a developer and it required developer for the black toner too. Then it needed photoreceptors, heater units, waste toner containers @ £12 each etc. I noted that for each print it made it used a certain amount of toner whether needed or not. It dumped the remainder in the waste toner cartridge, the one that costed £12 a throw!0 -
I also only print occasionally and so inkjets tend to dry up in-between prints.
I have just recently bought a HP LaserJet 4100n from eBay, from a seller that sells reconditioned office printers.
The printer came with a toner cartridge and Jet direct network card, all for £33 including delivery (including 30 day guarantee)
Absolute bargain and it's a great printer!0 -

Simply - replacement cartridges supplied by a manufacturer separate from the printer manufacturer. I have found SVP and UKDVDR reliable suppliers:

Very frequently, it is much easier to obtain cheap cartridges for Epson printers than other manufacturers. These become available a short while after the printer goes on sale. (Epson are always launching 'new' printers with slightly different cartridges to stay one step ahead, so buying a printer at the end of its run is a good idea) It is MUCH more difficult to get very cheap HP, Lexmark, Dell and Canon.
As for Epson printers needing regular head cleaning and eventually packing up- true but with regular use, I have found that the cheap ones last 3 or 4 years, not bad for a £30 printer! Do other cheap printers last a lot longer?0 -
I've established a routine now for printer shopping. Epson C66 for approx £30 used with cheap cartridges (about £14 for 12). Works perfectly buit after about 9 - 12 months the message appears "There are parts on this machine which are coming to the end of their time - and need replacement" That's when I buy a new machine for £30 !! Works for me.0
