iPlayer is being removed from some OLDER Sony models due to performance issues.  There is no suggestion that it is being removed from newer models or not included in current models.

Are you sure? This is from a T3 review of the new Sony A90J, 3 grands-worth of telly :

"For UK users, it's also worth noting that while I’ve been testing the A90J, it doesn’t currently support the BBC iPlayer app. So it wasn’t possible to use the TV to watch the BBC’s live Euro 2020 streams in 4K HDR. In fact, at the time of writing the A90J doesn’t support the majority of UK catch-up TV apps. As well as the missing iPlayer, there’s no ITV Hub and no All 4. Nor is there any sign of the YouView umbrella app that’s provided all of the UK’s catch-up services on previous generations of Sony TV.

Sony still says it’s going to be adding these services soon – but it’s been saying that for a long time now."

    Is this still true?

I'm sure molerat will be right.  If BBC iPlayer is not available maybe Sony would add them later but I am not sure how the 'systems' work.

I have been looking at Sony 2021 televisions (not too big) maybe one screen size above 32" ? 43".   This one:

Sony Bravia KD32W800 (2021) LED HDR HD Ready 720p Smart Android TV, 32 inch with Freeview Play

is just a little bit too small.

I have heard that some Sony TVs don't have bbc iplayer now although my present older Sony smart TV has bbc iplayer.  (I use a Humax Freeview Box with my present Sony TV and I'm not sure if that makes a difference.)

I was hoping to possibly find a good Sony offer on Black Friday but wonder if the absence of bbc iplayer in 2021 models is going to be a permanent problem.

Any advice would be really helpful to enable me to look in advance of Black Friday,  thanks.

If the set is stock android then it won't have any apps installed so more free space on the set to install only the apps you want to install. The manufacturer does put some apps on the TV but it is up to them what they install if it is a skinned android version.
Someone please tell me what money is
  • Thanks wild666.  I'm afraid I don't  know what a skinned version is or what a stock Android set i - would the shop (John Lewis or Richer Sounds) be able to advise.

Would you recommend anything very similar as an alternative 43" to look at, JJ_Egan, please?

Have a look at the Chinese brand called Hisense its making big inroads into the Tv market.
  • I would be wary of sticking to black friday sales, I have seen cheaper at other times of the year (for stuff I have been tracking for me). Depends how long you want to wait.
