I think as things stand the cheapest PCR tests are now cheaper than the cheapest LFT tests. You can buy a code for as little as £1.98 as well.

I have been looking around for a approved day 2 testing kit for the cheapest price but nothing coming up. What sites are people using? i need to book one in the next few days. thanks
I think I mentioned this on another post but you don't need to have bought the day 2 test before you leave the UK. You can only fill in your return passenger locator form within 48hrs of your flight to the UK so you need to be able to get online. You can order the day 2 test kit just before filling in the PLF as the number you need comes with the order confirmation email not the kit. That way, if the UK switch to Lateral Flow before you return you can buy the LF test kit.

I'm returning from a green country on 24th Oct, so i order the test while i'm abroad for home delivery after i get back to get the order number to fill in the PLF ? Is that correct ?

    Thanks
Sorry your sentence can be read that you are suggesting filling in the PLF after you have arrived back in the UK.

You need to fill in the PLF within 48hrs prior to returning to the UK and you need to input the 'reference' of the test kit that you have bought when you fill in the PLF. When you order the 2 day test kit the confirmation email will have the reference you need to enter on your PLF. The test kit should get posted to you and be awaiting your return to the UK.

The above is for info only and is similar to what I shall do returning to the UK on the 20th. You can buy the 2 day test kit before you leave or when you are abroad and if you buy a PCR and it changes to lateral flow I'd hope you can still use the PCR. If the UK Gov (England only?) hadn't said they were changing the test 'later this month' I'd buy one before I leave but being a tight wad if I can save 20p on a test I will.

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the poor English.
Yes i did realise i'd get the number for the PLF when i ordered the test while i'm away.
So i could order the 2 day kit now ? Or should i wait and see if the rules change to lateral flow ?
I wonder if the Gov. lateral flow tests will be OK ?

    Cheers
No, the rules say it has to be booked by an approved provider of tests and self-administering an NHS test doesn't fit with that.

I'd wait until a few days before or the rules change, but that's just me.

Assuming that's an in-person test, OP will need to ensure they are able to get to the testing location. That could well be a lot more than the saving.

It is a legal requirement to take the booked test, and I'm sure nobody here nor MSE will advocate breaching emergency legislation.

What happens if you don't take the test when you get back and how quickly ?
    Gov.uk website says

“You could be fined up to £2,000 if you do not take the required tests.”

    There's a legal loophole.

If you suspect you have COVID symptoms you cannot attend a private PCR test facility.

If you suspect you have COVID symptoms you have to self isolate and it’s not an exemption from Day 2 testing as Day 2 home testing is available.

How many people have been fined ?

Anyone willing to volunteer to test what happens if you don't take the test?

We could have a whiparound to pay the fine.
I missed a test (quite legally, as I happened to have to leave the country again unexpectedly) and never heard anything about it.
    Well that's a massive surprise  ;)

No one has addressed the issue as to why we are subjected to these tests and no one else in Europe is.

Possibly some but what if you contract it on a packed plane? If you do test positive then test and trace might alert those who were sitting near you which is why you need your seat number for the PLF.
Test and Trace contact all passengers on a plane when there is a positive day 2 result.  They advise you to get a further PCR test.  If you are double jabbed you do not need to isolate.  Seat numbers on the PLF are irrelevant as many people change seats after take off.  People still move about the plane to use the toilet etc.
Not at all doubting you as it sounds very credible and relates to a recent experience I've had where I was contact by T&T but how do you know that is the case?
Yes, personal experience following flight from Alicante last week.  I was sent a text message and email saying I had to isolate, but when I logged in it said that as I am double jabbed no need to isolate but they 'advise' me to take a PCR test.  My wife was sat on different seat and was contacted by phone.  The T&T man said they ask the whole plain to isolate on short flights but not long haul ?? Friends on same flight sat away from us at rear of plane also contacted and asked to isolate.  Plane had lots of empty seats.  In fact I had 2 empty seats next to me, as did my wife and only one person directly in front and one directly behind.
  • To update the thread from the OP (me).

All went quite smoothly. We ordered tests to be delivered to our home from Nationwide Pathology at a cost of £40 per person. Code for form was received immediately, tests were received within 2 days of order, before we went away, so they were waiting for us to do when we returned.

All quite smooth really the only thing I disagree with is the cost impact and the false advertising of pricing on the gov website.

I live in hope that by the time I return to the UK on Nov 6th the nebulous indication of the change from PCR to LFT given by Mr. Shapps will have occurred and I will by then need to purchase an LFT online for delivery to my home.
Does anyone know which  companies will be supplying these (Govt. Approved) LFT kits? ...and (being a cheapskate), if the EasyJet code will afford purchasers a discount?  :)
