Today we have started our Autumn cleaning in earnest.  Bathroom and en suite cleaned thoroughly.  Spare bedroom and DS’s bedroom cleaned and beds changed.  DS is coming home weekend after next for a few days.

Also made some bread rolls and some bacon and cheese savoury scones.

Went for a walk around the village (without money)!

Checked plants in greenhouse, sweet peas and rocket have started to germinate.  It’s a bit of an experiment to see if they will survive the winter  The greenhouse isn’t heated.

Breakfast was porridge and stewed apple. Lunch savoury scone with cream cheese.  Tonight its pepper pasta with home made garlic bread, using two of the rolls I made earlier and DH will make some garlic butter to go on them.

A bit more cleaning done today – some kitchen cupboards – which resulted in me sorting out my cookbooks (now have a bag of them to take to second hand bookshop) and finding an old toaster which has gone in the charity bag.

Also, a few Christmas presents wrapped for DS.

Meal planning done for the next couple of weeks and online shop ordered Monday.

DH and I had our walk around the village again (taking no money with us).  Was quite busy with a few holiday makers for the half term.

This week we are aiming for no spending during the week and no going out in the car.  So far so good.  We have a few Christmas lunches booked so will be going out a bit more in December.

This afternoon I am out at my friends for our sewing and gossip session.

Breakfast was toasted crumpets, lunch potato salad and hard boiled egg.  Tonight we are having bangers and mash with peas.

    Jobs done today:

Walk – again taking no money so not tempted by the café

    Sitting room cleaned thoroughly

Washing done and now on the line drying

    General tidying up done

Woke to a lovely sunny day, although breezy but not cold.  Breakfast was toasted crumpet, lunch potato salad, tomato and savoury scone with cream cheese.  Dinner tonight is scampi and oven chips with baked beans.

This afternoon will be spent mainly knitting – I am hoping to finish my jumper off today.

Just had a letter through the door to say that DH is entitled to a £500 for the winter fuel payment and the extra bit the Govt is giving this year.  First time DH has qualified for this.  As soon as it hits our account I will put it away in premium bonds.  Luckily we filled our oil tank a couple of months ago, so won't need to do so again for another 8 months or so.

  • Ooh excellent news on the extra money. I can't wait to get to state pension age and start getting winter fuel allowance...we need some perks as we get older.

This morning we cleaned the bedroom – right down to taking the mattress off and cleaning the bedstead and springs (its an old fashioned wrought iron bedstead).

We then cut each other’s hair.  I have always hated going to the hairdresser, no idea why and during lockdown we started to cut each others hair and have carried on doing so.  I do go to the hairdresser once every 6 months just to get some shape in, but my hair is bob shaped and its easy for DH just to cut the length and he’s got very good at it!  His hair is easy, I just run the clippers over what is left of it!

I did finish my jumper last night and am really pleased with it.  Have started a new one today.  This one is a bit more of a challenge.

Breakfast was porridge and stewed apple, lunch soup and for dinner its slow cooker sausage casserole with mash.

DH has a blood test appointment at 7pm believe it or not.  All the time we were working appointments were always between 9-5, now we are retired they are any time but 9-5. So frustrating as we could have done with this when we are working.  Anyway, rant over!

While he’s having his test – I am going to pop to the local shop (the surgery is in the next village) and they have a shop which opens late and will get some milk as we are very short.  So, no NSD today, but a planned and controlled spend.  So we are using the car today as well.

No NSD today as we decided to go to the pub late afternoon/early evening.  After that we went to the chip shop to get chips to go with home made sausage roll.  We struck lucky as the chip shop gave us a few fish fingers for free (the joys of living in a small village).  So, we had fish and fish fingers, so the home made sausage rolls will do for Saturday and Sunday instead.

Breakfast was toasted teaakes and lunch was pasta salad.

The craft room was cleaned this morning.

    Back to the NSDs today

Breakfast was toasted teacake, lunch sausage plait salad.  Tonight we have friends coming to dinner.  I am making Jamie Oliver’s meatballs from his One Pan cookbook which we’ll have with some mulled wine.  My friend is making the pudding – sticky toffee puddings.

General tidy up and clean around.

  • We just had toasted teacakes,. Love them. I resisted the urge to smother it in apricot jam.
