Thank you all. Yes it is a relief to be back having an additional income coming in. Will make life that little bit easier. DH and Uncle have set off to Scotland to clear DD's room out for the last time. The tenancy is up in a few weeks. DD meanwhile has flown off to Greece on her first girls hol.

I'm a bit nervous about starting this job. The last one must have knocked my confidence more than I'd realised. I am looking forward to earning again though.

I do have some concerns re DS. He moved to his gf's parents last week. Her parents have booked a hol for them all to go on this Autumn, that they need to contribute to, though parents will help. Also have taken DS clothes shopping. Don't get me wrong he was desperate for stuff, I'd already mentioned to my Mum that if she was looking for stocking fillers for him for this Xmas he was in desperate need of basics. DS received min student loan and this year him and gf have been living off it. We haven't been in a position to help out more because of paying for DD and we paid DS rent - we were fortunate enough to find accommodation that charged per room, so gf could be included but as you know it's left us without a spare penny. So DS has a new wardrobe, inc some new footwear, which yes he needed but he now needs to pay that back to as well as the holiday contribution once he's working, so around £800 of debt to someone already when he's yet to find work. He's been looking but he does need his CV finishing off which is a job DH will look at today.

DH said we could give him some money towards his clothes/hol but I've said we need to sort our own finances out first plus I don't want to tread on anyone's toes. We have paid for his passport renewal, we said he would because it was our choice to take him away aged 15 which meant he only got a 5 year passport whereas DD's wasn't renewed until she was 17 so got the 10 year one.

Meanwhile DD is on her first girls hols and *thinks* they've had some money taken from their unlocked (???) safe! I think it's quite a possibility that they've just overspent and not realised! Teenagers!!!!

I totally get your nervousness about the new job @Spendless Did you say a friend had introduced you? Do they also work there and can they help to orientate you around the building, systems used and introduce you to colleagues? Is it Monday that you start?

I'm not sure what to say about DS and his future inlaws. Good on the one hand that they are helping in practical ways. Not sure if I invited my adult children on holiday that I'd expect them to pay for it though, especially when they aren't working! Did inlaws contribute at all when their DD was at uni with DS?

Hope DD can eek out the money she and her friends have left. DH went on a lads holiday before I met him and they survived on ketchup, weetabix and whisky the last two days (left behind in the cruddy apartment) as had no money!

It's a friend's job sort of, she's taken on more hours due to the semi retirement of a more senior member of staff so these are her xtra hours that now need someone doing - why it's only temp till everyone says whether they are continuing with their new arrangement or not. The boss is meeting me on my first day to show me around.

Nope they didn't. Due to DS min loan we have always paid his rent in full (which has always inc bills)  ourselves and given him his loan to live on, food, socialising. Last year the rent we paid was a price 'per room' so gf could also live there. Was a little bit dearer than if we'd just found digs for DS but not a huge amount more. I really expected gf to find work during the year - she graduated last year, but that didn't happen. Instead the pair of them lived off DS loan, some savings she had and DS doing a little online work. Every so often gf's parents and occasionally us would do a food shop for them. We probably did that less often due to paying rent in full plus having DD['s costs. I do wonder if the hol is a carrot and stick to find work. He's excited about it and he def needed clothes but at the same time they have a wedding booked for next summer.....
