@LadyWithAPlan - you know me so well - will do my best to gamify this most annoying of purchases!@KajiKita - it definitely won't! To add insult to injury, we only got a 7-year warranty, which seems to be less than others such as pavlovs_dogIt looks like Worcester-Bosch offer up to 12 years on their best combi boilers, will probably go down this route for a bit more security.Bit of a riddy this morning - applied for a new job (crappy government website) and the system fell over mid-application. There was no way to resubmit it, so I emailed the recruiting manager to explain, then the darn thing reset a few minutes later and I was able to successfully apply. I then had to email back saying "please ignore last email". Let's hope they don't think I'm a total panicky Pete!5

DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

@beanielou - no way!
I'm heading into town for a rare trip to the pub with my big brother, only the second social/day out thing I've done since going off sick, so looking forward to it.
Applied for a 21 month 0% purchase CC while waiting at the station, only took a few minutes as I was pre-approved and allows us to move forward with the boiler. I have a smaller residual balance of c. £850 sitting elsewhere, I'll pay this off when Mrs E gets paid as the introductory offer ends in a week.7 -
Suffolk_lass said:I don't have a better suggestion than putting the cost of a replacement on a 0% CC. I do have some advice from our heating engineer who (now) looks after our (oil) boiler.
- He advises that my attempts at frugality by using only hot water for most of the year, causes parts to seize up; specifically and repeatedly the heating pump and some fan part related to this. I am told that summer or winter, I should trigger the heating once a month.
- I also have to check the pressure level once a week or so to ensure it stays over 1 but ideally under 1.5. Under 1, there are two valves I open to re-pressurise the boiler, over 1.5 (usually over 2), I go to the radiator outside the downstairs loo (the lowest valve) and using a radiator key, a jug and a cloth or three (one to direct, one to mop, one underneath the jug) I depressurise the system by releasing the radiator valve
- Our expansion vessel perishes every 5 years (maximum)
- Our boiler has suffered mystery electrical issues over several years since an engineer attempted to replace the expansion vessel without first depressurising the system (exploding very hot water over himself and the exposed electrical panel of controls, the inside of the cupboard and the floor. It was a Friday afternoon and he was obviously trying to get it done more quickly to get away but he caused (probably, but not able to prove it) over £1500 of damage when subsequent parts and labour are combined. I no longer use that company, I use a private, nearing retirement, oil engineer, and between us, we nurse it forward.
Thinking of you all x5 -
Apologies edinburgher, hope things improve. I took my previous employer to an employment tribunal in the mid 90s, with the assistance of a union. Long and the short it was absolutely awful. Hopefully things will become better when you can move on to another position.6
