I think it is a bad idea. The current limit is high enough.1

Using GooglePay instead of my card all the time anyway, this has a mute effect on me.
For those who carry (and lose) their cards though, this may become an issue.
Wait for the flurry of articles, in early 2022, around increased fraud, as I am sure many media outlets will look for a story on this decision.1 -
Use ApplePay / GooglePay then the limit is nearly irrelevant. You will then also not need to carry your card, so losing it is a non-issue, too. Cue the "I don't have a smartphone and will never have one" faction - fair enough, your choice.2

Haven't carried a wallet \ debit cards about my person for some time now (I prefer to use ApplePay) but personally I think this increase is a good idea - although I feel £100 is probably the ceiling without multi-factor authentication.0

To be fair I’ve never used them before but with the limit increase I think I will start to as it’s a good idea in terms of not needing your card on you so you can’t lose it in the first place.colsten said:Use ApplePay / GooglePay then the limit is nearly irrelevant. Even with £100 limit, there is a limit how much someone could realistically steal quickly and with so many places with CCTV etc, it should (albeit isn't because of police unwillingness to investigate) be enough to put people off.0 -
So is Googlepay an app that you load up with your debit card details then just hold your phone to the contactless terminal to pay?
Do you have to be connected to data/Bluetooth for it to work? How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
I can recommend you do this. I have used ApplePay for at least 4 years and wouldn't go back to carrying any cards. I also have all my loyalty cards on the phone/watch, and as I have no need for cash, I have no need to even carry a purse now.MarkN88 said:

All my cards are linked to Curve (free version), and Curve is the card I use in ApplePay, so I can switch cards easily. Curve can even automatically use a different card if the default card doesn't work for some reason.1 -
I haven't used Applepay much, but think this will spur me to leave the debit card at home, or at least ask for a card without contactless0

No, but you do need a phone that has NFC - Near Field Communication, surprisingly there still seem to be many that don't. You only need data for any confirmation notifications.Sea_Shell said:So is Googlepay an app that you load up with your debit card details then just hold your phone to the contactless terminal to pay?
