I live a rural and grubby life and the VNM works on plant machinery so his work uniform often reeks of hydraulic oil or similar.   Has anyone tried this options under such circumstances?
Yes. Spot treat any stains with washing up liquid but soak in a solution of cold water, twice as much vinegar as baking soda (not washing) and a couple of tablespoons of salt - soak for a minimum of two hours and don't wash them hot or it sets the stains and smells. You can also rub specific areas with a mild household solid bar vegetable soap (like the Green Fairy stuff they stopped making) before washing in the machine - marseilles soap is one option.

Of course I still have some Fairy soap because I was stocked up for my lifetime!

EX H was in the paras always coming home with filthy uniforms and it worked well after spot cleaning as S_L says.

paying that much for his taxi would kill it dead for me though, but I'm a miser.
