Why does the solicitor not accept a marriage certificate?  I would have thought that would allow documents in either the maiden name or married name to be used to verify a person's identity.
The bank isn't allowing the certificate and so they've gone ahead and changed to my maiden name.

So we've now had to call Solicitors to change documentation to maiden name.

Solicitors need proof I basically own my maiden name , but they can't use my IDs as they are being used for proof of address and photo ID

I'm super peed as in my other comment,  we were assured by multiple agencies that it was fine and people in this situation gets accepted easily every day ... yeah right.

Why would you solicitor need that? Absolute rubbish. Give him a copy of your birth certificate and if that is not enough tell him you will go to  another solicitor.

  • A marriage certificate is legal confirmation of your name so banks shouldn’t refuse it - unless they believe it to be fraudulent.

In terms of bills; you can change utilities to your maiden but they will usually ask for proof to do this x

Birth certificate isn't much use as proof of ID - all it evidences is the birth name of somebody born at a place/date, not that you're that person.

Unfortunately there are no standard requirements for what solicitors (or anybody else) will accept as ID.

I'm struggling a bit to understand why you're buying in one name, if everything in terms of ID etc. is in the other name...

It's just making everything more complicated than it needs to be surely?
So we were applying in my marriage name because 99% is in my married name and now the bank has turned around and said to us that they can't accept marriage certificate.  So mortgage broke said the bank is happy to apply in maiden name.

So we've had to change my maiden name on solicitors documents but to do so they need evidence of utility bills as they can't use my marriage certificate.

Mortgage broker, solicitor and someone else said the banks will accept my marriage certificate along with my maiden name id's .

My IDs are the only thing left in maiden name

So didn't think there was a problem since multiple people told us it would be fine including someone either working along side bank or for the bank.
I'd get your driving licence and possibly passport changed then. It's free to change your driving licence if you do it online, but a fresh passport is from £75.50.

Yeah I would, I've asked if this was an option but I can't as we're too far in the sale for me to. I said at the start of house buying to send my driving licence off, but hubs said no, that was 3 months ago now.

So I'm stuck with 2 utility bills or house sale falls through
  • Ots annoying because I said I should suck it up and pay £75.50 tk change passport after we got married , and then a few weeks into house sale to change driving licence.  Was met with a no it'll be fine :(

I'd get the driving licence change going now, alongside the utility bills. DVLA can be very quick with the name and address changes.

Is your name changed at work for National Insurance purposes? If so you could request a letter confirming your NI number - this is sometimes acceptable as long as it is within a certain time.

Dude, I can't change my drivers license yet because we're in the middle of the sale, like my mortgage broker specifically told us it's too late for me to change it unless house falls through. If that happens Then I can.

My NI is in my married name and so is my work stuff (joined there after I got married)

Dude, looks like your purchase might fall through then, unless you can get the utilities sorted double quick.
