Surely Barclaycard are to blame for this. If the OP did miss type the card number. First of all if there was no balance on the account, they should have reversed the balance transfer payment.

As the credit balance has been transferred out the account, they should re-debt the amount and redirect the money to the OPs account or back to Sainsbury's.

Even though it not money laundering, Barclaycard have basically assisted in fraud.
What if there was a balance on the account it was transferred too?

How do you know the balance has been transferred out?

That is the definition Money Laundering.... Apart from it was clean money going in 🤦‍♀️

Either way pointing the finger of blame is not going to help the OP get their money back. Only FOS can rule on that. We will just have to hope that the OP comes back once FOS has made a decision.

Barclays confirmed that the recipient had the funds and did a credit balance refund to withdraw the funds!
Plan now is to wait for ombudsman and police whilst that person walks round with £4048 in their pocket.

Surprising that they divulged that information given it's a breach of the DPA.

Well barclays divulged that to sainsburys who confirmed that information in writing to me in their final complaint response!

Does anyone know if we can say with certainty that code on misdirected payments would definitely apply? If it was a Faster Payment pursuant to what Sainsburys say in there ts and cs that they use FS for balance transfers, my reading is the code applies.

Very strange that the code itself cannot be found just guidance on the code!

    It doesn't apply.

Well whatever the ins and outs of it, it is a criminal offence under the theft act for the recipient to knowingly hold on to the funds, so the other people you should be badgering is the police.

fwif I still don't believe that a typo resulted in a valid card number.

So Barclaycard just applied a payment to a random card number?  That's more believable?  Even though I linked a recent FOS case of exactly the same thing happening?

no, my belief is that the reference number on the faster payment to barclays was a valid card number but not the one the op typed in with a single typo. No i don't know how that happened.

We don't know that the OP made a single typo.  If the OP knew they'd made a single typo then they'd have corrected it.

they were told on one occasion it was a single digit and on another 4 digits apparently

"sainsburus who say it was automated and there was a typo. However on one occasion i was told 1 digit was incorrect and on another i was told 4 digits were incorrect"
