I chose the energy forum . How can I be on the wrong forum.
Also my meter does not register 100’s of cu ft.
Does your meter look like this?
The meter pictured measures in cubic feet, and the reading is 081410 cubic feet.
The numbers you submit to your energy provider are the black digits, 0814 and is in hundreds of cubic feet.
What numbers have you been sending in to your energy company? Can you share a photo of your meter?

    Thanks QrizB
Yes my meter made by Schlumberger is very very similar showing U6 on upper rt.hand side
Two questions immediately come to mind:
Why only say FT.CUBED in bold and no mention of 100’s of cu.ft
Why does converting the 212 fig. X0.0283 give a figure of 6 tying in with the U6 type meter
    Very confusing

Because the reading on the meter in the picture, as explained you, is 081410 cu ft.  But the reading you would give to your gas supplier, if asked for a reading would be 0814.  You can either multiply 081410 by 0.0283 or you can multiply 0814 by 2.83; you get the same answer either way (well slightly different but to your benefit because you are not required to pay for fractions of 100 cu ft).

I have been sending the first four digits to my old supplier for years ( even have my own records)
May have a problem sending a picture but will keep trying

Ther meter measures in cubic feet. There are six digits; four black, one red that moves and a fixed "0". The reading on the pictured meter is 081410 cubic feet.
However gas is billed for in hundreds of cubic feet. You read the black digits only and that gives you the number in hundreds of cubic feet. The picture is reading 0814 hundreds of cubic feet.
Regarding your U6 question I have no idea, sorry.

It does make me doubt now that my new supplier’s confirmation that they would indeed be using a 0.0283 conversion factor is both correct and true.
My meter btw has a date of 1991 as against your picture showing 1988
All this came to light when my bill went up in May this year by 77% based on the coming Winter’s estimated consumption. This after receiving a credit for low consumption !!

The usual reasons why the DD (which isn't the bill) goes up is a) because you are in debt and the supplier is predicting that you will be in debt at the end of your fix.or b) that he has had an actual reading following a sequence of estimated readings.

Give us some readings please and note that letter E meaning estimated.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Still learning how to navigate this forum….
    Thanks for the information.
I can do the maths well enough but raising my bill by a whopping 77% when I had been getting credits for low gas consumption did not make sense then or now.
Will educate myself into this misleading system of meters that display units in cu.ft when it seems they are in 100’s of cu.ft. Nor is the “U6” meter designation fully explained to me yet.
Waiting  for a phone call from “ senior management” …
    Thanks again.
    Over and out

Gas is measured in cubic feet.  But the numbers would be unwieldy and it would be easy to make mistakes.  You ignore the last two digits on the right so a reading of 123456 would be quoted as 1234.  The gas company will multiply it by 100 when doing their sums to convert it to kilowatt hours.  Surely you don't really believe that one gas supplier would bill for 100 times the real usage and no one had ever spotted it before?

There's no reason why it should concern you, it's purely academic.  Bigger users require bigger meters.  It the River Thames had a meter, it would need to be bigger than your domestic one, but it would still measure the same basic quantity, just a lot more of it !
You're just seriously over thinking it, your basic problem being that you fail to realise that the DD amount is not a bill, it's just a contribution to a kitty that may or may not be have enough money in it to pay the bill when it arrives.
