Are there any genuine PAYG deals left?

I've just had virgin threaten to bar my sim card because I don't use it enough. I don't use it much because a couple of years ago they raised the cost to £2 for the first call and £2 for the first text. So I need to change. I absolutely can't afford a contract so may have to just give up having a phone. I speak to my brother every 4 to 6 weeks (he calls me) and that's it, but it was nice having a phone in case of emergencies. Are there any real PAYG deals left?

  • Two quid a call/text is outragous. Think they're wanting rid of you! Virgin use Vodafone as their carrier so if that network has good coverage for you then look at ASDA mobile who also use Vodafone. 4p/min for calls/texts/MB data. Credit doesn't expire but you have to make at least one chargable call/text every 180 days.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think ASDA still does real PAYG for new customers, you seem to have to pay a monthly fee. Thanks for the info on Three but data is of no interest to me, I literally have the phone for emergency calls or receiving a call from my brother and a couple of relatives very infrequently. I'm thinking of looking at giffgaff, seems to be one of the few real PAYG deals left.
  • Not sure why you think ASDA require a monthly fee. They do have monthly bundles for purchase but they're not required. Their PAYG page is here https://mobile.asda.com/pay-as-you-go. Giffgaff PAYG is much the same but their rates are more expensive (25p/min calls, 10p/text). They use the O2 network.

An EE PAYG SIM is a possibility. Online they sell them with a renewable £10/month bundle etc, but if you order one (£10) and as soon as you get it text 'STOP BUNDLE' to 150 it will switch to normal PAYG rates (35p/min, 10p/text from memory) - all you have to do is make a chargeable event (eg send 1 text) each 6 months to keep it active.

That's a very good deal. Do you have a link to a details/purchase page?

That seems to be data only. No use for the OP.
Asda looks good for low usage, just need to make a call/send a text once every 180 days, so spend 8p a year, then credit doesn't expire.

Ah I see, so according to Three it's a data-only sim for tablets, mi-fi etc but if you use it for voice/text then the 3/2/1 tariff applies. Costs 10 quid and this is credit that expires after a month. It would be a good deal were it not for that up-front cost.

No. Its payg. No need 2 pre load sim. Ucan put as little as £2 on using the website. I no its payg,as iv been on it since 2017,using it in my fone. Im a low user,so its ideal for me. Only used £10 of credit last year. I only top up when my credit gets low
