All smart meters need to be the same. You can’t expect the ‘ordinary main in the street’ to have to negotiate complex menu systems just to submit a basic meter reading - not if you want cooperation and reliable readings.
It is never going to happen. The majority of suppliers do have online guides for the meters that they install. The problem is that suppliers end up with smart meters as a result of switching which they haven’t installed.

The days of having to read indexes are numbered as the Government is keen that suppliers move to half hour usage billing in support of industry settlements. I now frequently receive electricity bills with no index readings.

Make the meter have a simple interface, something like a single button clearly marked ‘press for reading’ Any second register needs another button that if the register isn’t used the meter shows basic text saying ‘not used’. Or something along those lines…
The fix is to avoid the need for manual readings by customers, anything else is never going to fly as the possible combinations of registers and time slots greatly exceeds any buttons you could ever fit even if there was a chance of a redesign which there isn’t.

Surely in these IT days it can't be too difficult to click on the serial number and taken to a central database of how to read your meter.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

I wonder how this guy got on being on british gas in 2017 I would expect him to have got the free electricity deal. And someone advised him to read the same reading as me. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5716438/can-anyone-help-me-with-my-smart-meter-from-british-gas

I agree. But at the moment you can't even go to the manufacturer website and get a manual or decent information on reading their meters. Look at kaifas abd landys and gyrs websites. Spec sheets yes, but no manuals.

Perhaps because one of the drivers for smart metering was that consumers would never need to read their meters again. It is also possible, I believe, with too much button pressing to disconnect the meter from the comms hub.

Who would maintain it and pay for it? At the moment, the DCC is responsible for the overarching smart meter system; comms hubs and regulations. Individual manufacturers are required to get their devices approved for use on the network, and they are responsible for updating their own firmware and testing it in DCC run labs before deployment.

The central database, for want of a better expression, is Google (there are other search engines available).

So just heard back from British Gas this is going to get more fun not😡 they don't even seem to know or care about register2. So my meter dispute is not going to fix things.

Hi Mike, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. You electric account was closed to a final meter reading of 19992 I can get the reading changed to 23355 but it will produce a larger final bill from us. You're reading the meter correctly the Total Act Import screen is your up to date meter reading. ^Paul

Your meter reading dispute was as likely to muddy the waters than fix things because the final meter reading of 19992 was correct.  Unfortunately the next reading you supplied to Eon was wrong and now you can't convince them otherwise.
