I swapped over from BG who I was paying variable direct debit with monthly in March this year using the mse cheap energy club. Which recommended eon this is a fixed rate billed every 3 months. Today I got my 1st bill and it says I have used 4510kw of electric since 18th of march I have no idea how as my average kw usage per month was about 500kw with BG.We watch what we use and do not have any high usage appliances other than the washing machine and rarely use the shower as we use gas for the bath. As you can see from my previous electric bill history this is a massive jump. The meter readings are correct to my knowledge so I do not understand how it's jumped so high? The meter is a landis and gyr e470 it was smart with BG now its dumb and I have to read it and submit the reading which I think I did right Total Import Act  was the reading.

Do the BG bills show the readings as Smart or Estimated?  They could have been estimated despite you having a so-called smart meter, in which case it's now a catch-up bill.

Were you ever on an Economy 7 tariff at any point with the smart meter?

All BG readings are smart no estimates and my opening reading with eon was 19992 which was also on my final bill from BG my meter now says its 24531 . Hang on I  took pictures of the readings on the smart monitor 18th of march the day of switch over and it was 23355. But BG must have gave them the 19992 reading? So that will explain the high usage now to find out who is at fault. here is a pic of my final bill and one I took of the meter read on the swapover date.

The protocol is that you provide the changeover reading to Eon, your new supplier.  Eon then submit this reading to an independent adjudicator who may adjust the reading.  This is passed on to your old supplier so they can issue a final bill.  You may well soon get a revised final bill if the handover reading was 23355 or something like.  It looks as if BG have not been able to read your smart meter and all the figures in your long list are estimates.

OK, so both suppliers have used the same meter reading to open and use your accounts. Before you jump up and down and cry foul, you need to bear in mind that an Agreed Readings Dispute will result in you getting a revised Final Bill from your old supplier. 4539 units might look like a big bill but the actual cost difference is 4539 times the difference in the two unit prices; eg, if BG was charging 10p/kWh and E.oN is charging 11p/kWh then then the extra cost to you £45.39. If E.oN is cheaper than BG then it is best to say nothing.

PS. The gaining supplier passes the closing reading to your old supplier - not the other way round.

I am sure I gave eon the 23355 number that is why I took the pic no idea where BG got it as 19992 from can only guess is like you say the readings have been wrong and BG has just been estimating them despite them all saying smart meter read? just looking at the eon bill the 19992 number is an estimate?

One way or another you have to reconcile the two "readings" of 23355 kWh on 18th March and 19992 kWh on 17th March.

If your eon tariff is cheaper than British gas then just do nothing and pay the bill. Then you are now up to date and future bills will be more realistic.

If your British gas tariff was cheaper than your current eon, then make a claim to get your final reading and opening reading changed.
