  • Have you tried pouring boiling water on it? Sounds a bit weird but it's something my mum taught me and i find it really works.

Try fairy kitchen spray the one in the green container if you have any or otherwise I'd make a paste of either dishwasher powder (mashed up tablets if you use them) and washing up liquid or washing powder and washing up liquid and paint it on and leave it for a while (make sure it doesn't dry out). I also use a caustic soda solution on stainless steel but you would have to be really careful about this as it's toxic and can burn your skin.

Vileda do a sponge with a green back on it that isn't abrasive, and I've been using this with a ton of elbow grease to get the marks off the stainless steel hob (someone used a scourer and OH went bonkers - so I got these and they work well) Think it's a £1 for two

The kitchen in our new house has a solid electric hob, who ever lived here has not kept it as I would and the rings have burnt on gunge round the bottom. Its stainless steel and I want to try and get the crud off....any suggestions as to what to use to clean it.

Hopefuly both the oven and hob will be replaced next year but in the mean time I would like to at least get it looking presentable.

  • There is this very useful product called 'HobBrite' which I bought for our hob then replaced the hob to a gas one! The times I used it, I found it great, but it did require a lot of elbow grease too.

I think Jif/Cif would probably do the same job, but whatever you use it will require some effort. I think that using products like stardrops are great if you are starting out with something relatively clean, but when you are faced with years of someone else's muck to try and shift, the heavies are needed!

    Hope this helps,

I use a cream cleanser and a mild scourer around my solid hot plates. The trick is to keep them clean and to remove previous owners muck will take some elbow grease. Be careful how much abuse you give the actual plates as they can go rusty.

Can you borrow a steam cleaner? They are fabulous at getting off old baked on carp, and cleaning generally.
