I used to work as a full time teacher and reduced my days to 4 when I had my youngest child, which I did for a few years.  Due to the complexities  of juggling single parenthood of a large family, a difficult legal battle and teaching, I cut back to 3 days a week for a couple of years and have now gone back to full time. I found a 4 day a week salary  just about ok ( bearing in mind my salary was having to cover lots of us). Cutting back to 3 days was tough financially and was one of the reasons I got a second job. Could you work 3 days a week within education and branch out with your art / craft interests as a self employed business? Or work 3 days a week as your main role and pick up supply for the remaining 2 days as and when you want the work?
Yes, I think this could also be an option. I’m just petrified of building my business which sounds stupid!

  • It doesn’t sound stupid at all. Starting a business is a leap of faith but having been self employed in the past, I was often surprised by the way small conversations led to bigger jobs. Combining employment and self employment is a safe way to begin a business because in lean months you still have your employment salary to pay the essentials.  Have you looked in your local area because there may well be some free support available for business start ups? In my area there are frequent radio adverts for such support. I know it may sound odd but it is possible to see a 3 day 2 day split as an opportunity and that can be exciting.

It is very exciting as I know what I want to do, I just need the leap of faith to do it!

I will see what happens when he meets me next week.

Today has been lovely. DD had swimming and then had a nice day out with her dad. That meant I could meet a friend for coffee.

Tonight has been relaxing with DD. I’m tired now though and could happily go to bed and sleep!

I wonder what this week will bring. X

    Hi,

Not posted as my head has been in a mess. I had a meeting and we came to a way forward that he would take to the governors working part time and not teaching to protect my back. He suggested I also put voluntary redundancy at the bottom ‘just in case’ they didn’t agree and I’d at least have a further option. I did what he said and emailed what we’d discussed and at the end put that if neither option was ok then I’d accept redundancy.

Right before the deadline he emailed back pretty much denying our conversation and saying he planned to take redundancy to the governors as my back injury renders me incapable of doing my job so he’s going to look at whether or not I’m now capable at all and has requested HR are now involved and I think he’s hoping he can get rid of me sooner. My union are involved and I’m doing everything I can my side.

The thing that has annoyed me the most was my gut told me to just ask for voluntary. I was talked into the P/T bit by my colleagues and now he’s got the upper hand!

I’m happy to be leaving, but I just want it to be on my terms and not forced into something.

Having suffered for over 12 months with constant aching and having three further work injuries since the fall, with no time off but medical appointments, makes me wonder what it was all for. I’ve watched some colleagues go through similar.

Im a wonderful believer in fate and I suspected something like this would happen when I went against my gut feeling. Fate always moves me where it wants me to be.

Pay day is Tuesday. Money is okay. Managed to save just over £1000 this month. I’ve had to pretty much cut back on every single thing to make sure I’ve got at least three months pay. I’m up to half a month. Xx

Oh, and there were no witnesses to our conversation. It’s his word against mine.
