Thanks for the update @HillStreetBlues. I have always preferred the original but often have to rifle through to find it. I'll stock up next time I see it. I wouldn't be surprised if that gets watered down soon. 🤔☹️

Trying to get Husband to up his fibre and he's a salad and veggie dodger. Seeing lots of nuts and seeds in Aldi website. Any recommendations please ? I've seen seed mix, Brazil nuts, flaxseed, pine nuts, pecan halves, blanched hazelnuts, pumpkin seeds, walnut pieces, chia seeds, chestnuts and walnut halves.

    Thanks in advance !

Re: muesli, I have an old book with the Bircher family original recipe and none of the muesli in supermarkets resemble it at all.

My DH has almonds, Brazil nuts and walnut halves plus flaxseed from Aldi on his muesli along with fresh fruit. We find them good quality and VFM compared with other supermarkets. Can't compare with Lidl as I rarely shop there.
  • Chia seeds are particularly good for fibre, but any nuts and seeds are great (and have wider health benefits too).

The other thing that would be worth considering is passion fruit - it's by far the highest fibre fresh fruit (due to the black seeds) and you don't need to eat very much.

Bircher muesli needs to soak overnight so not sure how any supermarket will be replicating that!

i have been making it from a frugal recipe on here (sorry don't know where it is lurking!) essentially oats, jumbo if possible, soaked in apple juice with grated apple & nuts &/or seeds overnight.  In morning add fresh fruit & yoghurt.  Filling and delicious.

    Good recipe here:

Lidl do occasionally sell Bircher muesli in the chiller section with the yoghurts.  I've had it a couple of times and it's fine but being MSE i prefer to make it myself.

I cheat when doing so normally using a microwave soup cup and put an inch of oatmeal or barley flakes or even actual muesli (fond of the Lidl Nutty one).  I then top that with yoghurt and then fruit - frozen raspberries work well and means I can leave it out overnight while they thaw.  Tinned peaches or apricots are good too or fresh strawberries, blueberries.  If I have an apple I might chop that up to add.  I used to do this when I was working full time and knew I wasn't going to have proper time for breakfast the next morning and the cup having a sealed lid was easy to pop in a bag to take to work with me.

Bircher muesli sounds the same as what many recipes call overnight oats. This has become very popular as breakfast for people in a hurry in the mornings. Is there a difference? 🤔

Only that Bircher is/was I believe Swiss.  Like anything there's going to be lots of different ways to make it.

For nuts what I've done is buy several of the small packs/pots from various places to see which of the nuts I actually like.
Then shop around for the big packs, I tend to get 2-3 different varieties then mix in a container, following the recommend portion size of 30g.
Personally stick to raw nuts nothing salted or roasted.

I would be a bit careful about this, as nuts go rancid at different rates. Almonds stay good for a long time, but I learned the hard way that hazelnuts do not - and that can introduce an unwanted flavour to what would ordinarily be a highly edible snack.
