Good and Bad Buys at Lidl and Aldi stores (***Please don't expire***)

I've had Skyr yoghurt in the past and it's been lovely. So I was pleased to see some at Lidl this week and bought the strawberry flavour one. I doubt it has anything to do with Lidl but this is really not a pleasant item. I think it may be because it's the 0% fat version but it smells weird. Not like it's off but like it's chemical. I can only suppose that's due to making it 0%. The full fat version may be nice - and I think that's what I've had previously as I normally don't buy 0% or low fat items due to the processing often needed to make them into something like the full fat version. I'll be going back to either buying the regular greek yoghurt (Lidl for preference but Aldi's is good too - likely from the same place...) or going elsewhere to buy a premium product like Bonne Maman.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Skyr is a type of yogurt that originally comes from Iceland, not a brand name. So it's very possible you've enjoyed a particular type of skyr in the past but don't like the Lidl version.1

In comparison to the mint choc they are slightly worse. They're certainly a bit smaller and thinner, but the icecream and choc is as good. Not overly hazelnut-y though. They have a solid choc core which is smooth and chewy and lovely. Himself reckoned he could eat 2 but he's a greedy gannet.
So I'll be buying them again, but I'll not be giving up the mint choc ones for themNo man is worth crawling on this earth.

I had a pleasant surprise at Lidl today - bought some OS goodies which were 60% off rather than the usual 30%, which in this case was even better than the green 20p sticker. No man is worth crawling on this earth.

Has anyone else seen Smoked Mackerel fillets back in Aldi yet?
Our one seems to have space on the shelf, but no label.
I wonder if it's just our store that doesn't have stock, as it's on their website. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)1 -
Loads in Norwich at the start of the week & in Lidl tooSuccess is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out.Thats what I keep telling myself :-)2

Aldi fresh prepack vegetables are getting worse quality wise. The wonky carrots of late have been bits or very old and going soft in places, even the normal ones haven't been very much better.
Twice in 3 weeks I've opened a Kilo bag of Baby potatoes to find most of them with blight and raised blisters on the skin, today's had two rotten spuds as well.
Yes they'll change them or refund you, but that inconveniences me/you having to go back to the shop.
Question is are Aldi deliberately buying in cheaper poor quality veg, or is the supplier taking the mickey and relying on poor quality control at the retailer end? I suspect the former.0 -
I think it's possible that retailers are just taking whatever they can get within their price range.
Carrots have improved a bit locally. A couple of weeks ago we had the bits of broken ones but since improved. Packing them wet seems to be the biggest problem.
Aldi cauliflowers were better today compared with Sainsburys. The latter were all blown and soft unless you want to pay way over the odds for organic.
No eggs in my local Aldi today for the second week running. Plenty in Waitrose, at a price. ☹️2 -

Worrying reports there about Aldi eggs - thanks! Was considering a click and collect this week to make up for the ones that Tesco didn't deliver, but maybe not! Morrisons, Waitrose and Ocado seem to have no problems - maybe they're paying a better price.
From a personal viewpoint I'd rather have the things at a higher price than none at all - a least that way there's a choice.3
