  • It's not like these Korean/Japanese cars are exempt from problems,

No, but you get much longer warranties. Why can't European manufacturers offer 5/7 year warranties?

Which still exclude issues arising from wear, issues arising from improper use, and are still voided by missing services.

Why don't other manufacturers? Simples. Because the extra sales would not be sufficient to be worth it.

    Renault, 5 years.
Vauxhall, no time limit up to 100000 miles for the first registered owner.

Vauxhall used to offer a lifetime warranty. The popular story is that they stopped because the hassle and bad feeling caused by having to constantly refuse warranty repair on any wear & tear item (virtually everything is wear & tear on a Vauxhall) outweighed any sales boost from the offer.

...first owner for 100k miles, non-first-owner 3yr/60k. Odd definition of "lifetime".

And a long way from a bumper-to-bumper warranty, too.

"Lifetime" = Lifetime of car = 100K miles. :)    Wonder how they got out of camchain replacements, 60,000 is very good for a vauxhall camchain, everyone else except BMW can get 200,000 or so though...

TBH, I think Kia and Hyundai would rather not offer 5/7 year warranties but were aware their products were viewed as a bit of a joke at the beginning and needed a USP.
Hard to go back on that, they've made their bed.
Silver lining for them is it still, regrettably, means people use the main dealers for servicing.
Doesn't matter how much you tell people that servicing can be done elsewhere, there's still a huge fear factor in keeping the warranty.

    Oh, I found this

Vauxhall claims that the lifetime warranty scheme, which was only launched in 2010, no longer makes 'business sense' due to the 'changing ownership landscape' for new cars. It also claims that its €4 billion investment in new powertain technology means the scheme isn't financially viable.
Erm.......  So after investing 4 billion euro, they cant make a powertrain last 100,000 miles???

The company cites the fact that 65% of retail car sales in the UK are now finance-based, and 60% of them are PCP leases where the car is given back after three years. It therefore feels that such an extensive warranty is no longer necessary for customers.
So, most people don't keep their car outside of a 3 year warranty, and the lifetime offer isn't a plus point to them, and it wont sell many cars.

By specifically mentioning it's not covered in the T+C, I'd imagine.
