There is a tour bus that takes you round town and gives you some idea of the layout and a lot of information / history. I think it was £5 for an adult day ticket but you can get on and off at any stops and get back on again. There is a 'family ticket' option but don't know what ages are classed as children. Not sure if it's a 9 am to 5 pm ticket, think it might be 24 hours so you could use it over two days and spend time in a few of the places. Stops include the art gallery, the conference centre/ music venue (that's where the music/ convention parts of the Goth Festival happen) and the micro brewery (that's just down the slope from the Abbey) but you can probably find out if there's anything interesting happening when you are there.
History includes Captain Cook stuff (centenary was 2 years ago I think), the Dracula/ Goth stuff, St Caedemon (I think - it was very Welsh sounding) who's the 'father of choral music' or somesuch (sorry I'm remembering info I heard once on a bus 2 and a half years ago), the Abbey and churchyard and the 199 steps. At the bottom of the steps is the old part of town where all the Jet shops are. There was a wonderful wholefood store/ restaurant along there but no idea if it's still there. The woman who brought our food actually took DS2 ,who was 4 mo at the time, off me and held him/ kept him quiet so I could eat in peace. Never happened before or since although DS1 once slept in his carrycot at the end of our table in an Indian restaurant and all the young waiters kept stopping to have a look at him and Italian, Chinese, Indian and wholefood places are the most baby friendly.
The North York Moors Railway is run as a charity mainly by volunteers (although they do have some seasonal jobs so if you're lucky you might leave one or both of the jobseekers behind - worth looking at youth hostel vacancies too). It used to be the Pickering to Grosmont line but was extended to Whitby a few years ago. I remember Pickering as being quite lovely (35 + years ago). Went quite recently but it was all mum could do to walk from the point where we got off the coach down to the station for boarding the train so didn't see much. One of the stations is used in quite a lot of drama series as it's set up as a 1930's/ 1940's replica (can't remember which one but it will be on the website).
There are various trips round the bay (out of the harbour and round in a circle) including on a 'pirate' ship and a half size replica of the Endeavour (built for the centenary). Think there are some half day/ longer tours along the coast to see the wildlife/ geological features. The whale's tooth arch is on the west cliff just as you turn that way and you may recognise the building across the grass as the Royal hospital from the drama of the same name (heartbeat spin off). (I've also changed DS1's nappy on the grass verge there - they put up a plaque and everything).
Don't have any info on adventure type activities but I'm sure there are some. One of the wildlife parks has some polar bears and if you want to do the 'theme park' bit, I think Flamingoland or Flamingo World isn't far away. If it's windy walking along the west cliff or even the arms of the harbour wall are quite exhilarating. Scarborough and Redcar are the nearest 'big' seasidey places. Tourist information centre probably has a guide they can send you - sometimes it's better to plan and find out about places in advance (rather than in a service station on the way home).

Another jacket zip replaced after breakfast, chicken in the slow cooker, then a nice walk with hubby. After dinner, I planted all the peas & mange tout plants in a raised bed, moved the stuff in the compost bays along to the next bay, then lots more weeding. Another hot day.
Washed up after tea, cut out pattern pieces to make another bear & did the ironing.
Grateful for getting more things achieved, finishing my book & a soak in the bathUse it up, wear it out

Sunday- NSD 16.
I've had a really good weekend, I'm working tomorrow so just a "normal" weekend not a long one. The sun has kept on shining, lots of walking and I got all the grass cut.
Yesterday was a bit spendy but today was a NSD and all items bought yesterday were on a list.
Grateful for- time outside in the sun, a long horse ride yesterday while I had a child free afternoon, a meal out with family, and a catch up with a friend while she helped me out.

Thanks to everyone who has taken part this month and to all the readers and lurkers. Sorry I've been a bit absent (a few things I need to get sorted). I am taking no responsibility for the weather. I was reading a diary and am up to February and how cold, wet and miserable it was (winter did end but not much improvement).

What if I want to live simply
To drink coffee and watch the sunrise with nowhere to go
To climb a mountain for the view not the selfie
To cook healthy wholesome food to nourish my body, not to lose weight
To spend more time with my family, not working to afford things we don't need
It's time to slow down. To stop. To listen.
It's time to turn off the noise and distractions, the constant need for more, the comparisons and consumerism.
It's time to live simply and Be Wild and Free

thanks mothernerd for this month's challenge. i think i managed 15 x NSDs.
I had a lovely day out with DD2 yesterday; we did lots of walking and took a picnic. Only spends were on coffees. When we got back we went for a run! I've been wanting to start running again for ages so DD2 took me out and was very encouraging to her middle aged mumShe is going to devise a training schedule.
My friend has sent me some leftover seeds (very MSE) - lettuce and mange tout but hasn't paid correct postage so i have to pay £1.50 to receive them, oops! Oh well the thought was there
Your reveiw of Whitby mothernerd makes me excited for my week's holiday in autumn to Saltburn by the Sea (north of Whitby).
Hope everyone has a good Bank Holiday Monday

Going to stop on 16 NSDs, bought ice lollies from the long legged wading bird shop because it was so hot and we had run out of squash to drink. Had a nice walk down there, now we have them in the freezer.Thank you for the Whitby tips, and thank you for running May's challenge. Somehow I have over £300 excess in the budget, so will shunt that at the mortgage tomorrow when the figures catch up with reality (stupid banks!) and the money comes in for the month. You kept me on the straight and narrow.Grateful for hot water for lovely baths, warm weather to stop the central heating fairy, and being able to dry the washing on the line.4/10/22One Year Mortgage Free Yay!

Absolutely beautiful day today here, met up with friends for a planned lunch, sat outside in the sunshine, budgeted £25 and came in at £24 and some pence. It was so good to see them, they're old work colleagues who've become friends, I really miss working with them and just generally seeing them. Went for a lovely walk on Putney Heath too. So no NSD but a thoroughly enjoyable day, it's really boosted my spirits.
Been for a swim this evening as my back is really playing up today. Always feels nice to be in the water.
Grateful for beautiful sunshine, great company and yummy food.5 -
Monday-
Thanks mothernerd for May's challenge.
I finish on 17 NSDs but very little money left over as the spend days were reasonably "spendy", but I didn't break the budget entirely so it's all good!
Grateful today for the sunshine continuing, ice-creams at work and long light evenings.5
